Let me tell you a little about myself. I'm 35 years old, married, 3 kids, and I'm a Computing Analyst Sr. (Systems Programmer: Linux, Solaris, HPUX, manage Web Servers, Mysql).

I've ran a total of 7 marathon's, lots of 5K and 10k races. I've never ran a half marathon race. My best marathon is 3:02, and my next marathon goal is a sub 3 and that attempt will be at Boston. I just started running marathon's in September 2005, and I've ran six marathons in the last seven months. I'm addicted to running marathon's their lots of fun. But I thought I needed to train harder for Boston so I'm not going to run anymore Marathon's until Boston. I want to try to get that PR of a sub 3 hours. I've never really followed a training program, but I've started running

between 50 - 60 miles for the past 5 months. I started doing the Yasso 800s only one time so far. I do tempo runs during the week and a long run on Saturday's. I've started running a lot of hill routes to get ready for Boston. But any advice anyone has would greatly be appreciated. I know that I should be able to run a 2:50 marathon, and that's what I need to work towards. Like I said I haven't been running marathon's very long.

I ran 5 miles on Saturday at a 6:27 pace here were my splits

6:47, 6:34, 6:36, 6:19, 5:57.

I finished the week at 54 miles.

I ran 9.1 miles today at a 6:48 pace. It was 9 degrees outside when I started. Today I ran a flat route arounde our neighbor out to Chubbuck and back. The last few runs I've done have been very hilly routes to prepare for Boston.

Welcome to the blog!

How are you handling the 6:45-6:50 pace. Is it easy or do you find you really have to concentrate to maintain it?

Also, when did you run 4 miles in 23:22, and was it a certified course? If not certified, was it a least reliable (e.g. verified with several GPS measurements, a wheel, etc).

From Kory Wheatley on Tue, Dec 19, 2006 at 17:36:45

It was a certified race called the Harvest Run and it was in September of this year. This course had mile markers, it was a really fun race. The Marathon that I ran a 3:02 in was also this year at the Top Of Utah in Logan Utah, which you also ran an excellent time. I've run 6 marathons in the last 7 months which was a lot of fun. My last one was the Boise City of the Trees Marathon on November 5th which I ran a 3:04 in a downpour and 15 to 20 mph wind gusts not fun.

I've maintained a 6:45 - 6:50 on 16 and 18 mile runs, but I don't know if I could maintain it yet in a full marathon. That's what I really need to work on is maintaining this pace if I want to do well in Boston.

I haven't done a lot of speed work yet just one session of Yasso 800's. I typically don't run any less than 8 miles 6 days a week.

Ran in the morning 8.6 miles and on my lunch hour 4.2. Weather this morning was 9 degrees, but warmer than yesterday when I ran at 4 degrees Compared to yesterday it was a heat wave and you definitely feel the difference in temperature. My average pace was 6:48. Hoping tomorrow morning will also be even warmer.

Welcome to the blog. Looks like you have already ran some good times, plus you have some good marathon experience. I went out and ran Boston last year, it was enjoyable, but only my second marathon ever. My training was ok going into Boston, but I struggled a little when I hit the hills at the end of the race. I ended up running 3:06 which was a PR at the time for me, over the summer I increased the mileage and also the intensity of many of my runs, also continued doing some Yasso 800s, hill repeats, and tempo runs, also this past summer I ran 2 10Ks and 2 half marathons, I really felt like these things helped and I was able to run 2:46 at St. George. Just from reading your blog, looks like your training is already going good and you're well on your way to a PR at Boston. I'm still thinking about going out this year, but I know Superfly,Dave Holt, and WildBull all guys on this blog and people that live and train here in St. George are planning on going out for sure. Like I mentioned we went out last year as a running club and had a great time.

Ran this morning 9.1 miles at a 6:40 pace in

6 degree weather. Then I ran on my lunch hour 4.1 miles. This was just, "what I call", a floating pace (just running). I'm planning on running 70 miles this week.

I ran two runs today at 6:30 am in a snowstorm 11.1 miles. I only slipped once with 3 inches already on the ground. Than I ran 6 miles on the treadmill on my lunch hour at Golds Gym. My splits were 7:30, 7:20, 6:50, 6:30, 5:40, and 5:15. I could have ran a 4 something mile, but I had to be back at work. I've never really tried to see how fast I could exactly run one mile. Would that be a good thing to try?

Good training this week. Being able to run a 5:15 mile at the end of a 6 mile run shows you've got some speed. I expect you'll run at least 4:45 mile all out if not faster. With proper endurace, this is enough speed to run a sub-2:30 marathon. To build that endurance, you just need to consistently train like you did this week for a couple of years. For some people it comes sooner, but give yourself a couple of years to be safe.
