Monday
Today I run 8.3 miles in the morning at a 6:58 pace in 58:15 minutes on my standard Satterfield hilly course. I couldn't run as long, because I had to take my daughter to the dentist. I wanted to end the last four miles on the run at a faster pace and I achieved that (6:31, 6:13, 6:23, 6:40).

Lunch Hour:
Ran 2.3 miles on my lunch hour on the treadmill at the gym. This was just a warm-up so that I could do some strength training. The only excitement was watching ESPN while I was running. Can you guys believe the news about Brett Farve? He does deserve a better receiving group, and getting Moss would have really helped their changes this year. But you shouldn't whine about it and asked to be traded... if that's true.

I think as usual the media has blown the Favre thing out of proportion. He later posted a note on the Packer website stating that he never wanted to be traded.

Go Pack!

Kory,

You asked what I thought I could run a marathon in right now. I guess we will find out on Saturday. However, I am not really sure right now. I am hoping sub 2:45 at Ogden if all goes well but we will see what happens. I know I am in better shape than when I ran my first marathon bsaed on workouts and I ran a 2:47 then with negative splits of 1:25 & 1:22.

Oh yeah, so you know I think you are in better marathon shape than I am right now so that is why I keep telling you that a sub 2:45 should be your minimum goal at Teton.

I am not in St. George either so right now I am looking at Top of Utah as a Fall marathon. Maybe you can make it down for TOU.

From wheakory on Tue, May 15, 2007 at 17:08:18

I'm definitely running Top of Utah. I ran it last year very sick, with a temperature over 100 and cold and hot chills and my stomach was irritated the whole run. I couldn't keep water or gels down. I finished with a 3:02, but I was so confident coming into it last year that I would get under 3. I must have vomited at least 5 times on the run. I was ready to finish and get back to the hotel and climb in bed. I was really stupid for running on that day, but I didn't want to waste money so instead I risk my health which was the wrong choice. I definitely want to redeem myself by running it this year.

My problem with running a 2:45 right now is I don't feel I have enough MP miles on my long runs at this pace. I would really have to do that this weeked before June 9th, but will see.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 15, 2007 at 17:28:18

Kory - I rarely hit my actual race pace in my MP runs. The reason being I am not tapered, I usually do not have anybody to run with, and in the back of my mind I am thinking this is a training run. To give you an example - two days before the Strider's 30 K I run a 5 mile tempo on a mostly flat course alone in 28:27, and that was closer to threshold effort-wise than marathon pace. In fact, I went out at threshold and could not hold it. Two days later, still untapered, but with more glycogen in my system after some panic carbo-loading I have somebody to run with. I am now 500 feet higher and on a slower course. I am running over 3 times the distance, but because I have somebody to run with I run the first 5 miles in 28:57, second in 28:55, followed by 29:16, and then maintaining 6:00 mile pace on the last 3 uphill miles, and feeling in control, like I could go longer if I had to.

Do not worry about not hitting your actual race pace in training. You will go much faster in a race.

From Paul Petersen on Tue, May 15, 2007 at 17:34:26

I echo Sasha's comment here. The week before the Striders half marathon, I did a 4-mile tempo down Blacksmith Fork. I could barely hold 5:30 miles. 1 week later, I averaged 5:18/mile for the entire half marathon.

Just last week, I was running mile repeats at 5:18/mile on the track. Cody jumped in the fourth interval and paced me for the first and last lap. That interval was a 5:11 and felt much easier than the first three...all from having a another person in there with me.

Other people plus "race-day magic" make a HUGE difference! Your mind puts up large mental blocks during training sessions.

Thanks guys I guess I need to run with confidence instead of statistics. You guys have a great run in Ogden
