This morning was nice at 35 degrees and sunny with a little bit of a wind. I still wore tights, and was overdressed by the end of the run. I started out slow at (7:43, 7:22, 7:04) and progressively got faster just to test the knee. The knee felt okay a little discomfort but not really a pain. I did a couple more miles faster (7:01, 7:00), which all of this felt real easy. The heart rate has stayed pretty low these last couple of weeks with the training I've had to do.

Finally, I thought the heck with this if I'm going to run Ogden I need to test what the knee can do faster. I decided to start some sort of tempo and see what happens.

Mile 6: 6:34 (gently speeding up to test how the knee fills, not bad)
Mile 7: 6:11 ( Felt fun to exactly go a little faster, and the knee was doing good).
Mile 8: 5:52 (Hey! a 5 something mile I haven't seen that since SLC Marathon). I don't remember how it felt, but it must have not felt bad or I would have remembered that.
Mile 9: 6:13 ( Portion of this mile was uphill, and I was starting to get hot being so overdressed, but the mile felt good. I'm sure some of it was fatigue running a little bit faster.
Mile 10: 6:18 ( I eased off a little to start slowing down, because I realized I was on the last mile of the run and I didn't want to end so fast)
Mile 11: 6:38 (I ran an extra mile for recovery... just to ease of the pace a bit). This mile felt so easy.

11.5 miles at an overall 6:43 pace in 1:17 minutes.

I don't really know yet how to evaluate this performance, but it's a start and Ogden is close so I'll just have to be as ready as I can be.

Lunch:

Had a dentist appointment and thought I would get a run afterwards, but my knee is sore so I'm sticking to running just singles for now.  Pretty bummed about the knee, but you have to stay positive in all situations.

Glad to hear the knee held up! I hear you about the temp this morning, I decided to run in shorts and was glad I did.

You will do well in Ogden, just run to what you body (e.g. knee) will allow and make sure your goals are realistic for what you think you can do.

I am now thinking I need to really shoot for a sub 2:35 or lower to help get a full travel comp for the USA Master's marathon championships at the Twin Cities marathon. If I can do that, I think I will get it, if not then maybe a partial travel assistance (at best).

Kory, an amazing workout. I don't know how you dare work that hard as part of your recovery, but more power to you. Best wishes to in Ogden.

From Benn on Tue, May 06, 2008 at 08:20:56

I agree with Paul. I just took my brothers to see "Iron Man" a few days ago because my mom couldn't take them and there was this one scene where he comes walking out of an explosion, and the enemy sees him and they all scream and run with their tails between their legs. Case in point, your grit and determination with the singles and the training for Ogden reminds me of Iron Man. I can't wait for the race report in a couple weeks.

Oh and is the 2:35 under short term goals your goal for SGM?

From jtshad on Tue, May 06, 2008 at 09:27:24

Benn, Iron Man has always been my favorite superhero, so I can't wait to go see the movie, I have heard it is really good.

After watching Kory run, he is like Iron Man!

From wheakory on Tue, May 06, 2008 at 11:44:34

Benn - Thanks I'm no Iron Man I just hope I can stay together for Ogden. Right now my only goal is someday to get a 2:35. I don't know how long that will take but I believe I have it in me.

Jeff - the way your running you should be able to control your own destiny at Ogden. Your going to really fly on the course.

Paul - I just had to see how my knee was on a faster run. But it's still an issue , because it hurt this morning. Ogden going to be interesting.

I want to be able to finish this we strong with high mileage (around 75 -80 miles) than next week take a few days of from the race to rest the knee.

What do you guys think about this strategy? (Paul, Jeff, Benn)

From jtshad on Tue, May 06, 2008 at 14:34:44

Kory, I would shoot for more like 65-75 miles this week and next week cut back to around 30 miles before Saturday.

Hope the knee gets better.
