The blog is getting harder and harder to enter in the morning because of how busy I've been, but I'm trying to keep up.

The last week or longer I've been able to get over 8 hours of sleep each day.  I've really made an effort to do so and I really needed the rest.  I've had a lot on my mine lately about life in general, and things I need to change.  Running has become an addiction to where if I don't run one day than I'm upset, or at least exercise every 3 hours doing something (but I don't do any of this during family time so that's not the problem).  This is something I'm going to have to change with God's help because I've let it consume my life.  I'm sure some of you have felt like this before.  I'm trying to work-out a balance mentally for myself not to think it's bad to take a break or not exercise.  I think success sometimes can drive you over to an addiction to want to get better no matter what.

Anyway, I ran 11.73 miles at an overall 6:50 pace in 1:18.  The Temperature was at 25 degrees with a little bit of a wind.  This was going to be a slow run, like an 8 minute pace, because I was tired.  I got plenty of sleep last night.  The problem was I didn't eat enough yesterday, I'm down to 134 pounds right now.  I really didn't even want to run today, but I knew I had to.  The last 6 miles I picked the past up going up over Olympus Rd., and down Chubbuck and Hiline Rd.  Splits (6:39, 5:47, 6:04, 6:01, 6:49, 6:45).  Good run for no motivation.

Lunch:

Football practice did a lot of sprinting probably ran over 2 miles, but I'll only count as 1 mile.

Evening:

Ran after work and football practice to get extra miles in.  I've got to work at 11pm tonight so I don't know if I will run again tomorrow like last week as well.  I ran 7.61 miles at an overall 6:30 pace in 48:55.  I picked up the pace after the second mile.

Mile 3:   6:20  (flat and uphill)

Mile 4:    6:08  (uphill and rolling)

Mile 5:   5:37  (pretty much all downhill, but some flat)

Mile 6   5:52  (flat)

Mile 7:  6:38  ( flat -  good cool-down)

Solid run, especially with a lot on your mind and little motivation.

I, too, have run into the problem of letting running/fitness consume too much of my life and become somewhat of an addiction. Whenever I notice this happening, I make myself take a day or two off, regardless of how antsy I get, and get away from all things running (i.e. hang out with friends, get ahead at work, watch a crappy old movie, etc.). Whenever I do this, I generally come back as motivated as ever but with a new perspective and appreciation for the other aspects of my life. Best of luck to you, and happy running.

Thanks for your advice. I did take my wife out to dinner and a movie Friday night and I promised her that I wouldn't get up early Saturday morning to run. This really seemed to help. But like you said more than one day off might be better to give me mental toughness to fight the anxious feeling. Thanks again.

I admire your ability to see this in yourself. My guess is that you have always been quite the competitive athlete (I relate 110%). The week I completed my last marathon, I was already training to break 3 hours (w/barely any rest). This past week has helped me to regain perspective...it all kind of started when a kid in my daughter's class had his foot chopped off by a lawn mower. Rather than rushing to the hospital, I began to think through how to fit the visit into my running schedule...whoa! For some reason, although I'm careful not to overall spiritulize things, I think God used my sore foot this past week to help me "get it". The week off has helped...I'm still gonna train hard, but with my priorities back in place. Glad to see you had a good date night!

Kory, wow what perspectives from you and the others. I didn't really get into running until my children were basically grown. Still sometimes my wife thinks my running takes a little too much of our time. She goes with me on Saturday mornings and does her walk while we run, then breakfast for us all. Decisions, decisions. So typically I only run 3 days a week and sometimes 4. As Boston gets closer it will be 4 days more consistently. Enjoy, Paul

rockness18 - Don't worry about holding back on spirit things. You can talk about God all you want on my Blog. Don't hold back, because it helps hearing God's spirit come out of someone else. Beside maybe God wants you to share and he will Bless You for it. Thanks again for what you said and you really hit the nail on the head. I really need to focus in other areas. My spirit life isn't what it used to be, and that really disturbs me right now.

Kory you have a gift for running that is sure. But I also respect you for noticing when you might be devoting too much effort from yourself to live up to that gift. I agree with some of the others that a day or two off is a good thing. I too have fallen into a bad fix with the running blog only because I feel pressured to do way more runs than my body wants me to. I have always run best on just 3 or 4 runs a week (that includes all my PRs!). But it seems whenever I try to do 5 or 6 days a week I reinjure myself. I am taking some down time so hopefully I can come back and be a runner again. I know you don't need that much time off. But just remember to enjoy life because we all only live once. The way I see it running is my way of coping with all the other junk out there in the world and it's truly "my time". I would go crazy if I didn't actually get it. Oh and I agree that sometimes success breeds addiction.

Benn - Thanks for your advice. You really have a good observation on life. I need to force myself to take a week off and not worry if I gain a few pounds. Being fit isn't the most important thing in life. Enjoying family and life around you is, and the spiritual aspect of life is most important.

Take care with your achillies. Maybe sticking with running 3 to 4 times a week for a year might be the best. Then after a year see if you can increase the days.
