Long run this morning. 17.10 miles at an overall 6:59 pace in  1:59.   I felt dizzy and weak yesterday and I thought I was getting what my son had, but I seem to be okay.  I  didn't sleep well last night and I really didn't want to run this morning, but I knew I needed to feel one more long run before SGM.   I was getting tired a little in the run but it went okay.  I think just trying to run slower was making me tired, but there was no need to push the pace.  I've already pushed hard four weeks again in my previous marathon as well as in the training run yesterday.

I hit over 100 miles this week again which I wasn't planning but it just happened.  Next week either 65 to 70 miles or even less to feel real fresh.

I wanted to finish the last two miles at a faster pace, and I accomplished that (6:19, 6:03).

Kory, good to know you are healthy. I'm still totally amazed at your 100 mile plus weeks, amazing. Enjoy your taper.

I hate it when those 100 mpw sneak up on me like that :)...

Great week!

Thanks Paul and Adam - hopefully I didn't over-train and it will help me and not hurt me in two weeks. Maybe I should only do 60 next week then 35 following week. What do you guys think?

From Adam RW on Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 22:59:44

I believe in a good taper. It worked wonders for me at SLC. I went 71, 40, 25. If you think you can deal with it mentally, it is a good idea. I think the "extreme" decrease helps a lot of muscle damage recover. Also, when you look at it the final week is really a 60+ mile week after the race... The other thing I think helped was a week of carbo loading and not just the night before. There is some scientific thought as to why this make work though little evidence. It has to do with the structure of glycogen and how it is "made" in the short term versus "reprocessed" over a longer term...

Adam RW- That sounds like a great plan, because just running a marathon less than a month ago, I really should cut-back tremendously to freshen the legs up. That's again for your great advice.

Kory, just a reminder, the following link has a great discussion about pre-race carbo loading and post-race carbo/protein recovery. For Pikes Peak I used Gatorade Performance Series (21.7%) carbs for several days pre-race loading, and my post race I used Endurox R-4 (14.6% carbs and 9 g protein per 8oz serving).

One of the keys noted in the article is that during the race the body cannot absorb the high carbo levels of these drinks but they are great for pre-race and post-race. During the race I drink only the sports drink that is offered at the aid stations (not water). Enjoy the article.

Kory, I should have mentioned that in order to find the Gatorade Performance Series (21.7%) carbs and the Endurox R-4 (14.6%) I had to go to a health store and buy the powder mix. I went to many other stores and could not find these mixes as they seem to be a specialty.
