Last night I got over 7 hours of sleep and felt well rested this morning.  My legs were a little sore from the hard running yesterday, but they functioned in today's morning run.  I wasn't very happy last night with the horrible officials in my daughter's soccer game last night so I kept thinking about that all night.

I'm kind of bummed because my daughter's first XC race is this Thursday, but her school class is going on an overnight expedition.  This won't allow her to attend the race, but school has to come first.

This morning run I ran up Olympus Rd, and back down side Booth rd to get some uphill and downhill work.  Then I  ran down Yellowstone and turned on Industiral road and back home.  Started out the first two miles with a 7:56 and a 7:29 this was going to be my easy day of running.  Although I did run two consecutive faster miles 6:40 and 6:15.  I tried mainly to keep the pace in the 7 minute range.  I really need to training on rolling hills these next few weeks to simulate St . George.

Totals 10.51 miles at an overall 7:07 pace in 1:14.  This might be my only run today because of a busy schedule.

 (Mizuno Precison  -  575.5 miles)

 Evening

Ran  8.12 miles at an overall 6:58 pace in 56.37 minutes.  I ran in a very strong headwind, but my pace was still fast, but I felt like I was running an easy run.  Very weird, but I did a few hills going up Olympus rd down Booth Rd.  Basically the same area, (but not same route) that I ran this morning.   I did this while waiting for my daughter at soccer practice at the Gate City School by Highland High School.

When I read your race report you said that you ate the sport jelly beans? What flavor do you like? I have tried a few flavors, I like sucking on them for a while and then it seems like I have a hard time chewing them? Do you prefer them over GU's? How often in a Marathon do you eat them? It seems like when I do eat a GU it takes like a mile before my stomach finally settles down?

Great win by the way... Very inspiring, I like your scripture that you have on your blog.

TylerS - I've seemed to have found that I liked all of the flavors. I do the same thing by sucking on them and that seems to give me energy instead of swallowing all of them at once. Usually gels take about 15 minutes before they really work, and that's probably true with sports beans. One important fact with gels is take only water with them not a sports drink, because that can upset your stomach. Gels work better if you take them and then down them with water. I usually use the Powergel 2X Caffeine Double latte gels. Also like the honey stinger gels, which is just pure honey.

What I've found that works for me is using Sports Beans around mile 20 or 21 and using energy gels around mile 9. Then the next gel just depends how I feel so it might be between miles 14 -16 when I take the next one. I haven't tried taking the sport beans early in a race, but I should.

Sometimes gels upset my stomach. Taking gels really depends on the person, but you could go by this. Take your first gel anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour in the run, than every 30 minutes after that.

Anymore questions I would be glad to answer. Your 40 mile run was amazing. What pace did you have to go at to achieve that? I would like to do a ultra someday.

Kory,

Even though I did not ask the question, I still found your answer on gels/beans to be very helpful.
