I worked till after midnight last night installing security patches and updates on our Unix and Linux servers so I was tired when I woke up at 7am to run.

This morning the wind was blowing 30mph + again, and the temperature was 13 degrees. Barry came to my house this morning, and we decided to run the Pocatello Marathon course for about 8 to 10 miles (I already did my long run on Thursday). This is good altitude running at 6000 feet. We took two cars so we could park one at the top of the course and one 8 miles away.

We started at 8:30am, and the road was covered with snow and very slick! We had to take it easy for the first few miles (7:06, 7:36, 7:31, 7:52, 7:05). Then I decided to leave Barry and do some tempo miles. Barry was going to do about two miles around a 6:30 pace to get some speed in. I would run back to Barry once I reached the car. I started out the first tempo mile at 6:12, and at this point the road was slick for only the first part of the mile.

Next mile 5:43 felt easy and half downhill and flat.

5:26: half downhill and flat felt really good.

5:55: I ran half the mile to the truck then I had to stop because my shoelace came undone. Then I ran back for Barry and he finished at the truck. I kept running and I told him I wanted to run one more mile to make it 10. I did this mile at 5:22 with the first quarter downhill then the next half flat and the last quarter uphill in the wind! That was very encouraging.

Came home and installed our dishwasher finally and have a tee ball game with my son at 3pm.

Kory, when you've wrapped up all of that, if you wouldn't mind stopping by my house to pull shingles off my roof, install a new furnace, re-grout some tile and lay some new hardwood floors, that would be great. Oh, and maybe after that you can go out and drop some more 5:22's uphill into the wind :) nice work making it all work.

Kory, Great run and great effort. I don't konw what you were talking about yesterday, being concerned about what you are going to do at SLC. With the workouts you've done this week and the miles you dropped today with little sleep in freezing windy conditions I can tell you exactly what you are going to do at SLC. TEAR IT UP!!!

From Paul Ivory on Sat, Mar 29, 2008 at 21:22:10

Kory, how does your son's team play tee ball on days when it is 13 degrees in the morning? Are you trying to toughen him up to be like you? Nice job today!!

Benn - Thanks. Although my left calf has been sore the last couple of days, because I fell going up our stairs at work, and I thing I pulled it a bit. It's very sore right now and I'm going to have to watch it, and maybe I shouldn't have ran so hard today. Although, this isn't the leg my achilles was hurting on.

Chad - If I lived closer I would gladly help a fellow blogger. I really do wish I lived closer to everyone down there, because the running would be fun.

Adam RW - These were good miles, but you also have to consider that a lot of the tempo miles were downhill to so I really need to prove it on a flat course. I'm not trying to show a lack of confidence I just need to prove this on a flat course.

Paul Ivory - The game was at 3pm... and the temperature was 25 degrees. My son was dressed in three layers with a 20 mph wind that we also had to deal with. He did awesome... he actually hit all three times being pitched to, and didn't need the tee. I'm really tired of the wind here. It's seems to get worse each year during the fall, winter, and spring months.

The latest issue of Running Times lists Pocatello as the second fastest city of marathoners in the US. That rough weather that you guys have to deal with must make you all tougher and faster.

Andy - That's interesting about Pocatello.

I wish I had some of that speed their talking about. Thank you for the information.
