I started getting sick yesterday with a stuffy nose and a small headache and a sour throat so if I was going to feel like running this morning I was going to get to bed early last night.  I was in bed before 10pm and slept close to 9 hours.  I still woke up with a stuffy runny nose, cough and sour throat, but not bad enough for me to not run.

This morning I did 9 hill repeats over our overpass on Yellowstone.  I want to get used to running rolling hills and I thought this was a good start.  I ran 10.31 miles at an easy 7:15 pace in 1:14.  I did push the hill repeats too hard.  This will be my only run today.  I don't want to break my immune system down too much.

I figure whatever flat marathon course I decide to run most of them have hidden rolling hills so today was a good training day for that.  If you really call this a training day.  I feel like I'm still in a post depression St. George Marathon mode.  I can't get that race out of my head.  I'm still astonished all the things that happened to me in just that one marathon.

Lunch and Evening

600 sit-ups and 200 push-ups.  I've developed a cold, but I'm still going to try and run twice tomorrow.

Hope you get to feeling better. Nice run considering you didn't feel your best.

I have a question for you. I noticed that you have done some back to back marathons without a lot of time between. I am considering coming back and running another marathon since I feel the weather really effected my performance and I want to see what I am capable of. I am considering the Huntsville marathon. It would give me 8 weeks between marathons. Do you think this is enough time for me and if so how should I plan my training to get ready? Do you think I can come back and put in a good performance or will the first marathon effect performance in the second one? I really appreciate your advice.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim F - Sorry I didn't respond sooner. First give yourself a week of light running to recover or maybe even two. I actually ran faster and had better times each one that I did after another. I think you can get a better time because eight weeks is enough time.

The third week into the 8 week training session I would start to do a 4 to 6 mile tempo run once a week and then a long run of 15 - 18 miles (4 weeks from marathon do 20 miles). You want to have two easy run days. You really don't need to do more than one speed workout during this time, because you don't want to stress your body too much. You could change the tempo run to track work as well. I wouldn't go over 60 miles until maybe four weeks from the marathon then do a three week taper.

The main thing is make sure your recovered before you start back up.

Kory,

Thanks for the feedback it is very helpful. Especially the part about making sure that I am fully recovered before getting back into training mode. I am hungry for another chance and I might have tried to push back too fast. I will take a more conservative route. I also want to incorporate more tempo runs into my training especially some longer MP runs.

Thanks again,

jim

Jim - I was going to mention doing longer tempo runs, but I think you might want to wait till after this marathon. Yout don't want to stress a lot of fast stuff until you have a long period to train and build-up to it. If you want I would do some pickup miles or strides on the end of your easy run days just to get more speed.
