Ok I finally got a computer access at the condo we are at. I got up to the start and organized my pacers for the race and then I shedded my clothes and did a mile warmup. The wind came straight up the canyon and when I turned around and went back up to the starting line, I found it easier to run up the canyon. It was a warmer start despite the wind. We started on time and immediately, no one would go out because it would be suicide. We were running single file and I stayed about 8th overall behind BJ the windbreaker! He was a good sport for letting me stay behind for the first few miles. The group really didnt surge until mile 3 or so when we went from a head wind to a cross wind. Then it opened up and started to spread out. BJ started working on the main pack and I couldnt stay with him and found myself by myself and whenever there was a head wind it just made me fall back even more. I Passed a few guys which put me into 5th overall and that dreaded last hill at mile 9 brought me to my knees. I got passed immediately by 3 guys and when it went downhill I passsed 2 back. When we got out of the canyon Justin Park was running by himself ahead of us three and one of the guys surged and then the other and I followed suit but only had enough gusto to pass one at mile 12. The wind was so hard on us that I hit a 6:46 and knew I was way off. I worked harder in this race than any other half Ive run and my time doesnt show for it which is disheartening. But like many races Ive done before, I feel I showed better clout with this obstacle as Im sure the leaders would have been out of my site by mile 6 and this race they werent. I could see them all the way to the bottom of the canyon. Hopefully this race will help me get some PRs this year because if I worked like this on my last PR course Im sure I couldve hit a 1:08. Which was American Fork half. I felt like I coasted that race for the most part and had to try and push hard the last 5 to hang on to a win. I love this canyon and the drummers at the bottom and a nice warm getaway in March.

Great report Walter. It was great to see you down there and be able to visit with you a few times (you'll notice I mention you a lot in my report). You're a great person and I've got tremendous respect for you as a racer. I hope we have many more opportunities in the future to rub shoulders at races.

gotta love the wind!! seriously when else (except march and a few other months at times) can you get the resistant training??? seriously weight lifting and running you gotta feel good about the "workout". : D. Way to stay up there in front Walter as usual!! Top Ten is great.

From Walter on Sun, Mar 18, 2012 at 09:14:08 from 97.48.168.31

It was that for sure Julie! Very resistant!

Walter, can I just say ditto to everything you blogged about. That wind took everything out of me and I feel like I went into this race in really good shape. Nice job - way to hang in there and battle for a 1 placeAG finish!

From Walter on Sun, Mar 18, 2012 at 20:49:19 from 24.2.69.110

Thanks Jake, I had a rough time.

TM, Thats my second time Ive ran that with horrid wind. Oh well. My pace group did outstanding so it made it fun!

Melody, I wished I could have met you! It was a difficult race. I have found in my age, races like this are toll taking. I really cant give my all the entire race. It seemed like I would get angered and would fight and only had a half mile in me to keep it going with the wind and would give up. Those younger guys kept catching me and then Id surge and then they'd catch me.

A good run in very tough conditions, nicely done.

Hope you can make it to Boston!

Good job Walt. I saw on facebook you went to the golf course. We usually stay in the condos right by the course. And I love that course too!

From Christi on Mon, Mar 19, 2012 at 17:18:47 from 174.56.35.183

Great job! Especially considering the wind! It was rough out there-

From Walter on Mon, Mar 19, 2012 at 21:36:51 from 24.2.69.110

Thanks Jeff!

Clyde, I wished I could've tried golfing but it was crappy weather. They were good condos.

Christi, we showed clout by pushing through it even though the times werent there. It's always a competitive race so placing in the top ten is always a good thing. I wished I had more strength like Justin had running in that head wind.
