I took the bus up with Danielle and Smooth, Rachel, Becca, Tina and some of their friends. I went right to the elite area and got in the porta jon line and talked to Lisa Madsen and gave her some pointers. Those lines were long this year, they need to get more jons or lower the elite field. I saw Kelly and Scott and a few others and then was summoned by St. George Running Center team to get my butt over to the start. I hate waiting to long at the start but there was a lot of faces I hadnt seen in a while so I did my catching up. It was good to see the usual SG runners like Clyde, Steve, Amber, Marci, Dave etc. sorry if youre in the etc group. I made a game plan to work with Jeff, and Ben to run together for a 2:30 time. I really felt I could do it.  I had some mental issues of stress from the night before like my baby taking my garmin watch out of my running bag and my shorts. I usually put a few shorts in but he took my favorite ones out. The other was car issues, we had to borrow my dads car which started the stress. a 2006 VW Passat. I went to take my water bottles to the packet pickup and got their to late so I tried to figure out how to get them to someone. In the meantime I locked my wallet in the car so I went out to get it and realized the keyfob wasnt working. I paid 55 dollars to a tow truck who happened to be in the parking lot which pissed me off but I was trying to eliminate stress not fester on it. I ran in and got my packet right at 9. No chance for looking at any booths and buying a pair of shorts so I left it at that. Back to the start. We took off with a first mile of 5:48 I think it was and I felt really good. There was 3 or 4 fast runners ahead of the main pack which I ran in. They were talking and having a good time and joking around which was fun. The first little hill we came to around mile 3 I think it was I caught myself slowing a bit and they said where did Walter go? I said im right behind you! Im old and my 40 year old legs dont go up these hills like I used to.  That created a chuckle at my expense. We stayed together until the big hill at Veyo and the pack pulled away from Jeff and I. We knew we were ok with 6:40 ish for a few miles so we took it fairly easy. I kind of pushed it a bit around 9 and Jeff didnt respond so I panicked a bit because the main pack had a half mile lead at that point.  I later talked to Jeff who told me his stomache was churning which is not fun.  I decided to try and work on getting the pack again and I was alone, with a bit of head wind and pushed the pace to mile 16. I started picking off stragglers from the pack there and felt really strong besides a mess up on the clock. I didnt have a watch or anyone to tell me my splits and thought I was at mile 16 when I was at 15. The clock said 1:28:45 which made me excited. When I got to mile 16 it was at 1:33 and change. That depressed me because I knew I had to be pushing close to 5:30 or better on the rest of the downhill. I guess I let it get to me because I was at 1:58 at mile 20  which meant I had to have a 32 minute 10k. Not now on these legs. The heat really ripped me a new one at this point and found myself fading and getting passed by runners which has a severe effect on my psychy in a marathon. I cramped up at mile 23 and used that last downhill to keep going but once it flatted out a bit I had a bystander rub my thigh because I was in pain. I sort of hobbled in the last few miles and called it a day.  I ended up winning the Masters Murdock Cheverolet 100 dollars for the fastest old Please follow Fast Running Blog policy regarding vulgar language in Salt Lake County! Ye haw! Thanks Kelly for calling me and telling me that. I shouldve stayed for the awards. I also got my 400 bucks from top 10 from last year also so I ended up with 500 for my troubles to stimulate the gas station, tow truck, ihop, shopping mall(my daughters) Jiffy lube and a disgusting buffet my family all got sick at called Best Buffet. Its not Best or at least its not better than Chuckorama. lol

YAHOO, CASH!!!! Nice talking with you. I don't think your an old fart...just a fart!

From Walter on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 22:01:39 from 24.2.69.110

Kenzie, you know im a sh#t! lol It was good talking to you while you were in line for the massage table. I forgot to mention in my long winded report that I had a 4 handed massage after the race. Then Steve Hooper came over and started rubbing my ear lobe which is my week spot and caught me off guard. Funny guy! Whats your next race my friend?

From allie on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 22:08:37 from 24.10.191.18

buffets are always bad news. i can't stress that enough...

nice job yesterday, walter. sorry about the tough day, but way to hang in there to the finish. it's never bad when you come away with $500 cash :)

From Scott Ensign on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 22:09:34 from 70.58.46.82

great race and fun report Walter, your runs are always an adventure. and you need to choose your restaurants more carefully. what was it before Mesquite- fried jalapeno burgers or something that had you sicker than a dog? thanks for the heads up on best buffet. but I avoid buffets anyway as a certified germophobe.

From Scott Ensign on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 22:12:06 from 70.58.46.82

looks like my buffet comment was written simultaneously with Allie's. I wasn't poaching off her, really. we just think alike regarding buffets

From Walter on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 22:22:51 from 97.148.105.247

Scott and Allie, they are always a mistake I know. I wanted something quick and cheap and ended up stopping 4 or 5 times On the way home for puke breaks:( luckily my immune system was broken down to look up to the bad food as nutrition. Lol

From Steam8 on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 22:26:30 from 166.70.55.77

Ha! I am loving reading everyones reports! Great job Walter... you old fart! ;)

From TBean on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 22:37:13 from 75.169.118.47

I hate cramping the last few miles. Glad to hear you at least collected some cash.

From Walter on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 22:48:17 from 97.148.105.247

Thanks Amy. Hope to see you out soon.

Tbean, I usually fight severe cramping the last mile. It hit me early.

From julieesplin on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 23:40:14 from 75.169.164.171

It was good to see you at the finish and I loved your report. I thought I was at 11 when I was at 10, it stinks. I like realizing I'm farther than I thought, but that's only happened once.

From Walter on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 23:44:56 from 97.148.105.247

It was good to see you at the finish and see you in the top ten! Love it love it! Now you have to go back next year to collect your dough! :)

From MarkP on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 00:03:16 from 97.117.127.158

Wow, lots of drama before the race. You're a pro so you will be smoking everyone again soon. Way to finish and get some $!

From jtshad on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 09:06:39 from 69.20.183.178

Walter, it was a pleasure running with you again. I wish we could have worked together the whole way to keep us on track, but we each had our own issues at different points in the race to cause us to separate. If we could have stayed together...who knows! It was a tough day out there for us 2 old farts, hard to keep up with the younger guys and former winners of this race.

Keep running strong. Hope work continues to go well and the family stays well.

We will keep in touch and get our plans together for Boston.

From Walter on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 09:11:21 from 97.148.105.247

Thanks Mark. I think the sun is my enemy in marathons.

Jeff, I'm excited to head east and I'm going to work hard for it. Old farts rule!

From Merri on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 10:34:44 from 160.7.252.148

Great job Walter! I am pretty sure I saw you at the end, but just couldn't walk to come introduce myself. You are amazing!

From Bec on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 10:51:44 from 71.199.9.12

Wow, St, George sure was nice to you this year! You got some great money at least. Nice to see you guys at the expo and going up to the start. Keep runnin' Walter.

From Walter on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 11:07:20 from 97.148.105.247

Merry, it wouldve been good to meetcha. We need to do another frb party get together.

It was fun to butt in line with ya Becca and ride up. How did it go for ya? I'll go over and look at your entry.

From Steve on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 12:41:13 from 65.127.208.182

It's so nice to read all your guys race reports, working away, while I'm taking some time off playing in the pool! I have no problems with buffets. I like to take the food from around the edges of the pans where it has started to change color. You know how the macaroni gets that brown tinge? Good stuff.

Good race Walter. I know you are right at that edge of the 2:30. Watching you clean my clock at the TOU Half made me certain of that. Everybody talks about race day and training, but for most of us a fast marathon is about getting lucky with the family, work, health and million other higher priorities. I'm looking forward to some races together next year.

From Jake K on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 16:16:54 from 155.100.226.53

Nice run Walter. Considering the pre-race logistical nightmare and the heat, coming out of there w/ $500 isn't too shabby! :-) Way to go.

From Carina on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 19:12:23 from 204.15.86.83

Really not bad for an old guy ;) Maybe it's a good thing I didn't run this one, if the heat didn't make me sick I'm pretty sure seeing everyone puking would have! Great job still pulling out a great time with all the stress before hand, and all the troubles during the race!

Oh, and you don't get your winnings until the next year? Weird.

From Walter on Tue, Oct 04, 2011 at 00:35:36 from 97.149.112.158

Steve. I totally agree with you! I had a hard time this year keeping balance of all the above subject you stated. When I do get the balance then I will be back to my 2:30. Thanks!

Jake, I fell way off my top ten projection but enjoyed running with friends and supporters.

Carina, it's weird to see some not get affected at all like Danielle Johnson who won AF and other guys that had a hard time last year with the heat and dominate this year. I know I'll be better with a more positive outlook on life. That's what it's all about right?

From JD on Tue, Oct 04, 2011 at 00:47:01 from 97.117.107.209

Holy crap you're fast!! :-)

From Paul on Sat, Oct 08, 2011 at 12:06:45 from 24.10.141.104

Dang Walter, that is one long paragraph! Nice job in the race. Congrats on the $100. Stay away from Best Buffet.
