I didn't know what to expect, but 26.2 miles is a lot of miles. The course for the Utah Valley Marathon is beautiful--about 10 miles in the canyon, 10 miles on the Provo/Jordan river trail, and 6 or so on the roads through the neighborhood near Provo Towne Centre. Here's how the race went.

1--8:45.50

2--8:05.03

3--8:17.29

4--7:49.45

5--8:20.14

.2--3ish (I forgot to flip the switch when I crossed the line).

I was cruising at roughly a 3:30:00 marathon until mile 18, and then it all fell apart. I was still on track for 3:45:00 with 3.2 to go and only had to hit a 30:00 5K but couldn't quite do it. I'm thankful for the marathon experience and am glad that it's over. But mostly I'm thankful for Jerry--a guy I met running on the shoulder--and his pacing skills. We kept each other going, and I never got a chance to thank him after the race. Thanks, Jerry. After mile 18, it was all about gutting it out. Overall, I'm very pleased. I hit 2 of my goals and nearly licked the 3rd one. Now I know what to expect, somewhat. It's the legs that were giving out today, not the mind or the lungs, which is different than other days. BTW there were quite a few STG runners and bloggers who ran great races today. Way to run.

Great job! 1 done and many more to go - not that you want to hear that right now. Mastering those last few is the toughest challenge of marathoning - mentally and physically; but you already took one major step toward doing it... you did it once. Way to go. The kids were all very excited to see how you did.

Great job on the marathon. It feels good to get that first one done. Now you know what to expect and will only improve.

Congratulations on finishing your first marathon. It was a tough one and you should be proud of yourself.

Yeah! The first one is out of the way. That is always nice. AND that is one heck of a good time for the first one. They will just keep getting better!!!

Awesome race!!! You did so AMAZING!!! Way to do a marathon but not only do it but completely master it! You're so fast. Are you running the St.George Marathon?

No Way Coach Roberts! Your a Beast! That is an amazing time for a first marathon! I don't think I'm competition for you any more.. Your going to have to move on to taking down the 3 goolds!!

Holt--What you do is amazing. Handling a marathon the way you do intrigues much more than someone who handles rattlesnakes with his hands or takes the stink out of skunks w/ his teeth. Props.

Scott--Thanks for the support. Looks like we both want to improve our times now and, eventually, BQ.

Tarzan/Kelli--Way to support other marathoners physically and digitally. That arrogant Boston guy sounds way familiar. I was waiting for my wife, wearing my medal but feeling a little weird about, hoping no one would think I was trying to rub in others' faces, when that guy sat down next to me. I'm pretty sure I was the guy sitting next to him on the grass when he did his obnoxious medal presentation. The whole time I was wondering if he knew you guys or was just over-the-top lame. Anyway, good job helping your friend in on her first.

Sierra/Chandis--Thanks for caring. This whole XC journey has been awesome and will only get more awesome, depending on what we put into it. You guys have an awesome year ahead of you just remember the reward comes after the work, sometimes later than we think. I'm jealous that you guys have found running at such an early age. Be smart. Have fun. Work hard.

Yeah - what Kelli said. So many people cheered on Marion when we mentioned it was her first - this was the only sour apple we ran into.

Way to go Travis! Ditto to those who said you will only improve. You'll get a strategy and work it to your advantage. Thanks for being a good motivator and running buddy to Craig (and me!). In 5 years when we are neighbors, we'll do it some more.

Good job to Annaca as well! Congrats and keep it up!

I can only hope the next marathon I do is as good as this one. Way to go!

Sorry for the late response, I did not realize you ran this race. Nice to have the first one done! You did awesome and got a good taste of that last 10k. SGM will be so fun for you this year. keep working hard.
