* = These 5 races were run at 67.9 seconds per pound. If I want a PR, I need to weigh less than 170 pounds. Short-Term Running Goals: 2024 GOALS:
to not get fat Long-Term Running Goals: Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states. Personal: I'm married, with two sons, 18, and 19.
I started running because someone dared me to.
I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

Last day of school. On a Monday?! That is so dumb! Don't get me started...Anyhow, that means this:

| 7.5 miles. Hood Route to Legacy Trail and back. 5:30 am start. 59:45. 7:58 pace. 72 Deg. 78% Hum. 64 D.P. I ran through a spider web @ mile 5 that almost threw me backwards. Heinous.
So, one of the "cool kids" from Sarasota ran the Comrades Marathon in Africa last weekend. It is @ 56 miles of hilly madness. Sure, it is net downhill, but so was Boston, and that was completely misleading. They have bouncers that stop folks from crossing the finish line, if they miss the cut off. Anyhow, the medal is the size of a quarter. I think the medal size should directly correspond to the level of difficulty of the race. My local flat 5k should have a quarter-sized medal. The Comrades Marathon should have a frisbee-sized medal, that annoys everyone who sees it, and forces them to refer to you as "Flavor Flav." Just my opinion.

| 7.5 miles. Hood Route to Legacy Trail and back. 5:30 am start. Untimed. 75 Deg. 89% Hum. 72 D.P. I wish I had timed this one. It felt really comfortable. ( I made a point to keep clear of the spider webs from yesterday. Like, 10'+ clear. What, are they going to jump out and get me?)
4.6 Miles. Ringling Bridge. 5:40 pm start. Untimed. 84 deg. 65% hum. 71 d.p. A helicopter flew very close to the bridge as I was running over. WAY TOO CLOSE, man!

| 20.75 miles. Legacy Trail to Caspersen Beach and back. 7:15 am Start. Ugly miles. Stopped at halfway for a bathroom break. Never really got things back together after that. Ran out of water after 16 miles. If I'm going to continue to run this long on Saturdays, I'm going to have to start earlier. That sun was just plain mean!

Then we took the boys to the beach for a morning of Skimboarding. They are getting pretty good, and asking me to teach them new tricks. I really didn't feel like running down, and hopping on that board this morning, but I did it anyway. Luckily, I came home without road rash, like the boys have.Time for a seafood lunch!

| 12.9 miles. Legacy Trail to Venice Avenue and Back. 5 am start. 79 deg. 79% hum. 3 straight weeks of Saturday Runfails. Less than a month to the next marathon, and I haven't been able to go more than 10 miles without stopping. This is not good. Yeah, the heat, yeah the humidity, yeah the life stuff, but I have no injuries, so I shouldn't be tanking it this bad.

I think this is SlowJoe's heat-induced apathy at work here. I just didn't feel like running the 12.9 scheduled miles. The clock is ticking, and I have to get going for the next race.

That smell of seaweed / dead fish / pelican waste cooking in the sun is pretty rough. SBVD was taking it easy today. Even he wasn't going to push it in this mess. Proud to beat the 8 minute man today.

After several weeks of falling apart on my long runs, it was good to finish, and I ran the whole thing. Hopefully, this means I have finally acclimated to the summer.
Then we took the boys to the beach. Clear and flat. No waves of any kind. Not so great for skimming or boogieboarding, but great therapy for my legs, I think. I even rode the skimboard one time. No tricks, just riding. It's weird. You run 20 miles and think "I ain't that old." Then you run 10 feet after a skimboard on a beach and think "Geez, I'm old." I'm sure it looked great.
