Short-Term Running Goals:

2024 GOALS:

to not get fat

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 18, and 19.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

A PR is a PR, and that is plenty to be excited about.

10k Split: 42:12

Half Split: 1:31:40

20 Mile Split: 2:24:20

So, it is pretty obvious that I went out way beyond my abilities. When there is a 6 minute difference between my first 10k and my last 10k,... yeah, that's not good. So, there is much work to be done with learning paces. Beautiful course. I was worried that this race would be like Charleston, where you have 5 miles of scenery, and 21 miles of industrial wasteland. Not the case. Oak hammocks and lakes throughout. 97% humidity, and the early miles were like ice skating. Also, very flat. You have one overpass @ mile 2, and on the way back @ mile 25. The Hokas did their job. My legs feel the best they ever have after a race. I ran the whole race behind a guy named "Brandon" who I guess is like a local celebrity, because he had fans everywhere on the course screaming for him. I passed him in the last 5k somewhere. The finish festival was great, and I ate all of the Cajun stuff I could get my hands on. I felt a little bad for the excellent band that was playing. They were yelling for everyone to raise their hands and stomp their feet, but most people could not. They were a really good band. Anyhow, congrats to all of the other FRB folks that raced today. I'll catch up on everything when I get back home Tuesday.

Great race, and never scoff at a PR, by definition it is a good day when you get one. You are seriously fast and getting faster, glad you had a good day. Funny about the band.

Congrats on the PR! This race is on my to do list, possibly for next year. I lived in Baton Rouge for several years, but left before this race was started. I had lots of friends out there running yesterday. I always loved running through the LSU campus and along the lakes.

Agree - you and Flatlander are right - a PR is a PR and by definition, that's a good thing! Congrats!

Wow...Darn Fast in my opinion! You've worked hard and now you have something to show for it! I'm looking forward to seeing more details.

From SlowJoe on Mon, Jan 20, 2014 at 17:18:52 from 66.69.93.8

Sounds like a good event. Congrats again on the PR.

Picking the right pace for a marathon is definitely an art and a science, that is very hard to get right. Anyone who says they can get it right every time is lying!

Awesome man! Friggin' Awesome!

I just looked at this again...I'm impressed!

Thanks for the kind words, all.

Tina, I thought this race was great. Very smooth production, Relatively inexpensive, nice shirt, excellent post race(including free bounce house slide/ rock climbing wall for my kids), etc. We had a great time in a town we might have never visited.

Joe, if only I had listened to your pre-race advice...

IJR, I don't have many more details. I went out way too fast, crashed, and held on to finish. That's about it. Miles 18-22 were pretty rough.

I did learn that driving 12 hours to and from a race is pretty much my limit, Mike the tiger has some seriously big paws, and that sliding down an Indian Mound on cardboard is as close to sledding as my kids have been.

Holy Smokes, your your first 10k was only 66 seconds slower than your 10k PR which you ran last month ... I would say you held on pretty darn good for the next 20 miles! Steamtown is a notoriously fast course, so to PR on an unaided course is awesome. Great job ... rest up and you get to try that pacing thing again in 3 months! :)

From Matt Schreiber on Tue, Jan 21, 2014 at 22:03:40 from 66.17.102.185

I'm pretty sure they were cheering for you Tom, not Brandon. Great race and a huge congrats on the PR! 97% humidity - Don't know how you did it.

Oh wow. Brandon is famous:

He spoke at the expo, I guess.

From Jake K on Wed, Jan 22, 2014 at 08:17:50 from 67.177.11.154

Brandon works for Saucony - he's coordinates their social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc).

If I had only known, I would have sang his song for the 16+ miles we ran within 30 feet of each other!
