This race was crazy tough and crazy awesome!!!

Not even sure where to begin.

Roughly 1200 participants divided into several different heats. Fonz and I had made a deal, I would run the Spartan if he would run SGM and I had to sign up in the competitive heat. I have be so nervous and sick about running it, but am beyond ecstatic that I did.

The terrain consisted of wicked elevation gains and losses above Soldier Hollow and 18 military obstacles. The obstacles were insane, including climbing up ropes, wading through mud pits that were higher than my navel, climbing over walls, dragging cinder blocks, jumping through fire, target shooting, throwing javelins, a rubick's cube, monkey bars, slick rocks, crawling under barbwire in the mud for roughly 200 yards with some military man yelling at you, balance beams, lifting up tires, and even running through a pit of gladiators (who knocked me over and threw me like a barbie doll) at the end!!!! CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY stuff. I have a few injuries (but nothing that won't heal and nothing that should keep me from running: shoulder and stinking thumb) and I look pretty dang beat up (bruises and cuts all over) but the trophy I got was totally worth it!!! Seriously, best trophy EVER EVER EVER!!!! And an experience that I will NEVER forget! :)

Miraculously, I was second overall female (first place was 10 minutes ahead of me, 3rd place was 5 seconds behind) and Fonz was the third overall man. The mens competition was definitely greater than the womens. According to Hobie Call (The Spartan King, I believe he has won 10 straight Spartan races) this was the toughest course in the series. He usually runs them just under an hour and this one took him 1:09. My goal was to double Hobie's time and try to beat it. I was thrilled with the result!! Not only did I get the coolest and heaviest trophy EVER but I also got a $150.00 pair of Skull Candy Rocnation Aviators (sadly my ipod is too old to use them ... I might have to remedy that) and qualification and entry to the 48 hour Death Race in North Carolina (which I will definitely NOT be doing).

BEST PART: Ry decided to run this last minute!!!!! He is the man!!!! He did AWESOME!!!! :) :) :) Seriously, I am the luckiest woman alive! (He said it was a good thing he didn't know what he was in for.) It was a GREAT day!!!

Oh yeah, so this was super cool and kept my fire burning throughout: about the last half of the race I was jockeying for 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. It was the coolest feeling when I would be in 2nd or 3rd place because when I would complete an obstacle you would hear one of the military people get on their walkie talkies and say, "2nd (or 3rd) woman just finished obstacle number blah blah blah." DANG THAT WAS AWESOME!!! Of course, I wasn't sure if it was exactly accurate because this was time chipped and I started towards the front. I definitely pushed myself to new limits in this race. I feel Spartan tough!!!! :) :) :)

Everyone should do this race at least once! http://www.spartanrace.com/

You rule! I'm going to get your autograph next time I see you. I feel so lame for just running a wimpy little half marathon yesterday.

The picture with Hobie Call is great too.

Wow! Way cool! Is that trophy one of the actual helmets they used in the movie 300? ;) Good Job! All hail, Queen Gorgo!

You Rock!!! Way to go!

I just noticed in one of the pictures that they had port o potties.

Spartan's don't use POP's!

SSF~

You are right ... the kids LOVE the trophy!!! They have each worn it around the house a few times. The first place woman was AWESOME!!! Ry heard someone say that she travels around doing these races. She was AMAZING!!! Love you!

Bradley~

Yes, totally authentic!!! Hee Hee! :)

Carina~

Thanks!!! It was awesome! :)

Rob~

I need to check out your race!! I'm just saying right now ... you should have run this one!!! You would have LOVED it!! Seriously!!! Hobie is awesome! And the POPs, spectators only!!! HA!!! I have never been so proud of scrapes, cuts and bruises! When they advertise 8+ miles of hell, they are not kidding. It is kind of freaky to sign the waiver of liability as well. They lay it on the line! :) :) :)

I really wanted to do this race. Will you do it again next year? That is an awesome trophy!!! Congratulations.

YOU ARE A SPARTAN WARRIOR! ROCK ON!

From JohnnyV on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 11:40:54 from 204.124.13.151

Congratulations Princess Warrior!!! Too bad that helmet will never fit.

From watchmerun on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 12:27:18 from 155.99.200.110

John--could you please be a bit more explicit? Is that because the helmet is too big or too small? I'm sure Teena would like a clearer explanation.

From RAD on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 12:37:06 from 98.202.17.113

Holy Moly!! How awesome!! That really is just amazing Teena! Too cool!

Dale~

I am definitely planning on running this race again. :)

Matt and John~

HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!! (When are we all meeting up for a run again?)

Rachel and Tim~

Thanks!!! I think I am pretty lucky that I did this the first year it was here in Utah. I am sure that next year the competition will be far steeper and that a chance for another helmet will be sparse. SO SO SO happy that I did it! :)

From Bonnie on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 13:20:51 from 71.209.188.153

Teena, you are tough, and beautiful to boot! Great job!

From allie on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 13:24:50 from 161.38.218.168

teena! awesome! that sounds incredibly tough. congratulations on such a strong showing in your debut spartan race -- 2nd place overall? that is amazing.

cool helmet!

From Teena Marie on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 13:30:14 from 67.2.116.1

Bonnie and Allie~

I was just lucky that you guys weren't there!!! Although that would have been AWESOME I really do love my helmet!!!!! :) :) :)

I definitely need to practice pulling myself up on a rope though. I was horrible at that obstacle. I got half way up the rope (this was about half way into the race) and my arms were just burning and shaking. Total weaksauce. I slid down and had to do a 30 burpee penalty. I also had to do burpees for missing the target on the javelin toss and for falling off these stupid fire ant infested logs (my understanding is that no woman was able to complete that one ... our legs were just too short ... they were spaced so far apart). So the big question is ... for next year to I train harder with climbing ropes and throwing javelins or do I just practice burpees???? ;)

From Kelli on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 13:50:16 from 71.219.100.205

SO COOL!!!!! I love the trophy and I would have loved to have seen you get thrown around like a barbie doll! I tried to talk Scott into doing that race, I think he could kick some butt. But he did not to get hurt. I will tell him no one really gets hurt and see if I can talk him in to it next year!

CONGRATS! That trophy, again, is awesome!

From Teena Marie on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 15:03:32 from 67.2.88.233

Kel~

You would have loved it!!! In fact, I told Ry that you would have given the first place woman a run for her money. She was tough ... but you are not human when it comes to racing!!!

As for not getting really hurt ... well ... Fonz just emailed me some nasty pictures. He has been in urgent care this morning being treated for a leg swollen to about three times its normal size. He got a pretty nasty puncture wound which got infected and spread like wild fire. I saw ambulances taking a few others out as well. BUT ... it was AWESOME!!!!!! :) :) :)

From JulieC on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 17:55:48 from 71.35.250.134

YOU SO TOTALLY ROCK WOMAN!!! I could NEVER see myself doing that race!! WAY TO GO!! CONGRATS ON COOL AWARDS!! AND NO INJURY!!

From Teena Marie on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 19:31:41 from 67.2.121.120

Thanks Julie!

From Kelli on Tue, Jul 12, 2011 at 17:03:31 from 71.219.75.108

He is infected???? A puncture wound??? AMBULANCES??? I like how you left all of that out!

I am not sure I would do well, but scott sure would. I have no arm strength, did you have to climb anything????

From fly on the Wall on Tue, Jul 12, 2011 at 17:31:44 from 204.113.19.47

"A puncture wound??? AMBULANCES??? I like how you left all of that out!" Ditto.

Oh my gosh, you are a machine! That is so awesome Teena! You have so much overall strength in the tiny little body of yours. :) :)
