* LOVED * LOVED * LOVED this race!!!

On Friday I was cursing Fly for having talked me into the Steeplechase but that all changed as soon as the race began. Everything about this race was FANTASTIC (especially having Ry there)!!

I had very little sleep the night before because I was so stinkin' nervous (I got about 4 hours which was about two more hours than Ryan had - apparantely he was even more nervous than I was).

I set a handful of goals for myself:

1. Fall 3 or less times. -------------- SUCCESS, I ONLY FELL TWICE!!! TAKE THAT!!! :)

2. Face the crags without fear. -- WAS A LITTLE SCARED BUT LOVED THIS PART OF THE RACE MOSTEST OF ALL!

3. Run hard but not crazy hard. -- CHECK!

4. Enjoy myself. ---------------------- CHECK!

5. Finish. ------------------------------- CHECK!

Other than the run section of the XTERRA tri this was my first race on trail. I thought I was capable of a sub 4 and dared imagine possibly hitting my marathon time but never dreamed of a 3:15. I think not pushing crazy hard was what made this race so much fun. I felt awesome throughout the entire race. In fact, after 8.5 miles I just kept feeling stronger and stronger. The race was over before I knew it. Crazy beautiful race!!! Crazy uphills and crazy downhills. The contrast was almost unbelievable. For example, my fastest mile was a 6:56 and my slowest mile was a 24:45!! INSANE yet AWESOME!!!

As for Ry ... all I can say is, "Dang, I love that man!!" His only goal was to finish before the 6 hour time limit. He did not wear a watch and just ran what felt good at the moment. He ended up running a 3:55:xx (I don't think results have been posted so I'm making my best guess). He says he will NEVER EVER EVER run that race again but I think in a few days I may be able to change his mind. :)

A huge shout out to Fly and his hawaiian shirt!!! Thank you one million times over.

This is a must run race for any of you contemplating a trail run that will challenge you, amaze you, and leave you in awe. Those few miles right after the ascent are 100% heavenly. Running down the trail amongst all the trees is simply breathtaking and worth every ounce of anguish put in to get there.

Beyond happy with how this all panned out!!! YES!!! Beautiful day!!! :) :) :)

Great job Teena! The Steeplechase is definitely the best kept secret around. Only two falls for a first timer is an achievement in itself.

From Teena Marie on Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 06:47:53 from 65.130.20.158

I absolutely agree ... One of the best kept secrets for sure! Amazing course! Plus it was cool knowing you hold the course record! I was pretty close to hitting your time though ... A mere tiny little hour and spare change behind!! HA! I simply can't wrap my mind around how you did that!! :-) :-)

Btw, how are you?

From Andrea on Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 10:54:58 from 72.37.171.52

You did awesome!! I'm glad you enjoyed it and felt stronger as the race went on. Congrats!

From Tara on Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 19:00:50 from 75.169.138.94

Very nice! That actually sounds fun! Congrats to Ryan as well.

Thanks for asking. After a couple of months of not being able to run I think I have finally turned the corner, as I was able to run 10 miles on Saturday. I am still very far from 100% but at least the PT and stretching seems to be paying off. Patience is a virtue, right? :)

From Rhett on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 10:05:35 from 24.121.1.136

Sweet race Teena! I could feel your excitement as I read the report. It ALMOST made me want to come up there for the race.

Congrats on hitting all your goals. What are crags?

From fly on the Wall on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 12:11:50 from 168.180.63.58

No surprise, you finished in the top ten!!! (and one of the Females ahead of you was named "Ben") That's better than good for your first time. You rocked it!

Have you started working on Ry for next year? Tell him he needs to come back so he can beat my 13 year old friend next time. ;)

From Teena Marie on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 12:42:25 from 128.110.84.236

Andrea~

THANKS!!! It was AWESOME!!! I had so much fun. :)

Tara~

It sounds fun because it was fun!!! It probably would not have been nearly as enjoyable if I would have pushed to the max though. I seriously loved it! :)

Fritz~

Patience is SUPER hard!!! It sounds like you have a good handle on things.. Never hesitate to drop me a question or two if there is anything I can help with. :)

From Teena Marie on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 12:45:17 from 128.110.84.236

Rhett~

I think that is a FANTASTIC idea ... come run the race next year!!!! It is AWESOME!!!! :) As far as the "crags" go, you can see a nice picture and explanation here: http://wahsatchsteeplechase.com/Wahsatch_Steeplechase/The_Race.html

Fly~

Can I get a "what what??" :) :) :) I was super excited when I saw that. Stinkin' BEN!!! :)

As far as Ry goes ... YES ... I have been working on him. So far he is not budging. He has some pretty funny stories from the race though. We all need to get together for some more runs! :) :) :)

From fly on the Wall on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 14:04:21 from 168.180.63.58

I'm excited to hear Rhett will be running it next year!!!!! Rhett, you are welcome to stay at our house. It is less than a mile walk to the start/finish.

Teena. That is crazy. How many of those did you climb and descend?

From Rhett on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 14:30:55 from 24.121.1.136

OK Fly, I just looked at your pictures of the crags. I'm OUT! How many people die each year? :)

From fly on the Wall on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 15:37:46 from 168.180.63.58

Come on Rhett, the crags aren't so bad as they you are making them out to be. They really aren't a big deal, but they do ad a fun and unique element to the race. Don't believe me? Re-read Teena's race report.

No one has ever died, something that can't be said for some road marathons. Just do it!

From Teena Marie on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 16:19:24 from 65.130.20.158

Rhett~

You would LOVE LOVE LOVE the crags!! Seriously, so fun!

So glad you will be staying at Fly's house and experiencing them first hand with us next year. :) :) :)

From Rhett on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 16:45:15 from 24.121.1.136

OK I believe you about the crags, but I recall a very large ALMOST in my original post about running that race. Who knows, maybe I will take you up on the offer to stay with you Fly and run the race next year. So much depends on how my running goes this year and how the Phoenix Marathon in March goes. I have been doing trail running every Saturday morning and have really grown to enjoy it.

From DaleG on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 17:47:05 from 152.216.11.5

Rhett, that's the part that scares me the most. My biggest fear is that I'll be too worn out by the time I get to them and I'll lose my balance and tumble to my death. :) What a way to go, right? I'm going to sign up again next year. It'll be fun. You know you want to do it, Rhett.

From Neasts on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 21:54:40 from 71.32.225.219

Wow and just wow. How did I miss that you did this? I keep hearing about all these fun races after the fact! I just need to get out more. Seriously, congratulations on a great job! Your excitement and smile just beams out of your report. :-)
