9 inches of snow. Decided to opt-out of today's run and went sledding with the family. We had a blast, maybe I should count all the trips up the sledding hill as easy miles. After about 20 min. we busted the sled by going over a huge rock. Don't worry nobody got hurt. However, my rear is just a little stiff.

Steve:

Sledding is good, but opting out of a run is not. The way this IT your are talking about will come back is when running (or cross-training when injured/tender) for less than an hour a day stops being an option. That is perhaps the most important element, and it becomes more critical as you get older.

As far as the amount of time it will take, I'd have to say plan for more than a year of at least 60 miles a week. You need to have a course and a hard workout you do on it that can serve an accurate indicator of your fitness. For example, run 3 miles moderately hard, and sprint the last 400 to measure how close you were to the limit. Do it once every two weeks or so to measure if what you are doing in your training is effective.
