Temp/humidity - 68F, 80% humidity start, 65F, 94% humidity finish.  Weather - overcast + some rain.  Wind - many different directions and speeds, but surprisingly not much of a factor.

The short version of the story is I did not get sub-3, did not PR, but feel pretty good about the race.  I had a really up-and-down journey today, where usually I'm pretty even keel and my performance just goes in one direction.  I don't ever do well over 60 degrees, no matter what I try, so to get close to my 3:01 Houston PR, which was on a much easier course and under much easier conditions, I think this was definitely a higher-quality performance.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Pre-race - got to talk to Preston (IJR) at the expo and again at the starting line.  It was great to finally meet him in person.  No big surprises leading up to the gun.  I just got up near the front since this is not a super fast race and took off feeling fine.

Miles 1-5 - 6:41, 6:42, 6:39, 6:30, 6:47.  By mile 1 I was pouring sweat.  Dammit.  I made up my mind early on that I was going to pretend it wasn't hot and humid, and just go for it.  I had nothing to lose.  I may, may, may have gotten a little carried away in the early miles but under ideal conditions I would venture to say it would have been the correct pace.  I made sure to grab water and gatorade at every aid station and I think that saved me from a more significant bonk in the long run.

Miles 6-10 - 6:36, 6:52, 6:33, 6:59, 6:52.  Still going under the who-cares-if-it's-too-fast plan through mile 8 (mile 7 was "gorilla hill").  Miles 9 and 10 are two of the toughest on the course, climbing about 100' between the two.  I'd remembered that from last year but man, it REALLY felt like it killed me this year.  I got passed by 3 or 4 people in this stretch and felt completely slammed (already).

Miles 11-15 - 7:05, 7:03, 7:09, 7:02, 6:55.  Struggle, struggle, struggle. Unlike last year I did not bounce back on this stretch.  Mile 11 my legs were already tightening up and getting heavy.  This is the sensation I usually get in a marathon 10 miles later!  I was ready to mentally give up and could already picture myself running 8:30 pace the rest of the way.  Now that I look at the splits it doesn't seem quite so bad, but the pain and discomfort were definitely there.  This is the flattest section, so it was what it was.  Crossed the half in 1:29:33.  Hmm, perfect time, but too bad I felt so terrible.  Then, sometime after mile 14, it started raining.  It felt awesome and my pace instantly got better.  I think I had unwittingly recovered a bit and the rain cooled me off enough to start pushing a bit more.

Miles 16-20 - 6:51, 6:59, 7:07, 7:12, 6:48.  So I decided I would get up to sub-3 pace again to see what happened.  It became clear that it was exceeding my speed limit.  Every time I pushed it to sub-7 my legs would turn into bricks.  Oh well, I tried.  I think the damage was done in the first 10k, and so I went back to survival pace.  Don't get too excited about mile 20, it was a 70 foot drop.

Mile 21-finish - 7:06, 7:30, 7:16, 7:22, 6:57, 7:13, 2:16 for 0.36 (6:18 pace).  Damaged goods for the last 10k.  I hate this strech on this race anyway.  Uphill, and the course joins with the half-marathon course for most of it.  I always add a tenth of a mile of bonus running to my race on this part due to weaving around the HM folks.  Still, believe it or not, I passed 3 full marathoners in the last 10k and did not get passed myself.  I think it was a hard day for everyone.  I did manage to put on a pretty nice sprint at the end, having noticed I had a chance to break 3:03.  Almost ashamed that it was that much faster than the miles before it.  I guess I was guilty of cruising a little when my dreams got crushed.

It took Danielle and I forever to find each other after the race, so I missed IJR's finish.  I guzzled a bunch of liquids and we made our way back home.  Nice that it was only an hour's drive for me this year.

So, like I said, I will deem the race a success.  I am pretty sure that I'm faster than the guy who just ran 3:01 at Houston a few months ago.  I can only hope that 3:01 will still get me into Boston since there were a bunch of deferments this year.

Fall marathon - Either Wichita KS in October or Tulsa in November.  Either way, there is no way...absolutely no way at all...that there will be a 3 in front of my time in that race.  I will go ahead and declare that now!  Plan for this summer is to drop back to 65-70 mpw and work on speed more.  I am already disappointed that racing season is over, but I made some great improvements and don't plan to let up too much this summer.  Sorry the report is so long; if you made it to the end, congrats to you as well!

joe - congrats. great race, and i will agree that it's probably a stronger performance than houston. i was just looking at the course profile this morning and it looked tough with a good amount of rollers. weather wasn't the best either. you absolutely will get the sub-3. you have been so very close both times -- shows you have the strength, speed and overall fitness, you just need the right day for it to come together (the joy of marathoning -- the right day can take awhile to show up, but it WILL come). enjoy the change-up in training for awhile and then attack the sub-3 in the fall.

From flatlander on Sun, Apr 29, 2012 at 16:16:45 from 76.31.26.153

That's a really good story and you definitely should stick to it. You just ran your last marathon with a 3 in front of it, wouldn't be surprised to see you under 2:50 very soon, if not the next race. Anything over 60F, humidity is the deciding factor, and you had a lot of humidity with the rain coming in. It was hot in a way that dry-climate runners don't experience very often.

From Dan on Sun, Apr 29, 2012 at 16:51:38 from 24.209.83.20

Heck of a race Joe, you had some nice mental toughness to not just pack it and go into survival mode. humidity and above 60 are draining for sure! So congrats on a strong race!

From Steam8 on Sun, Apr 29, 2012 at 17:07:42 from 166.70.55.77

Congrats to you! Loved the report. Sounded like a rough marathon. It is hard when training for something has stopped. I'd find something for the summer just to keep you motivated!

Great run. Take some time to heal up. You are super speedy FastJoe. I'll give you the advice I gave Preston....Come to Utah and run. The marathons are downhill and cool. You'll get a sub 3 for sure!

From Neil on Sun, Apr 29, 2012 at 17:11:14 from 97.121.40.61

Great effort today! Really respect how you didnt back away from your goal and just laid your cards on the table. Very inspiring to see how much progress you've made just in the last year. I agree with everyone else, you're right on the verge of having a HUGE breakthrough. Looking forward to seeing what you can do in the fall with some better weather conditions.

From SlowJoe on Sun, Apr 29, 2012 at 17:23:19 from 69.131.141.92

allie - thanks a lot, I really appreciate your encouragement and experienced point of view.

flat - thanks - anyone that runs in Houston is a humidity expert, so I will take that to the bank.

Dan - like I said, it was definitely back-and-forth a lot but I am happy with the way I ultimately kept pressing. Thanks!

S8 - thanks, I will definitely get to Utah eventually for a race, if for no other reason than to meet y'all!

Neil - I can definitely say I didn't wuss out there at the beginning, but maybe just a little more wussiness was called for! thanks!

From Neil on Sun, Apr 29, 2012 at 17:40:05 from 97.121.40.61

Forgot to add that I think you're qualifying time is solid for Boston. I read on the BAA Twitter feed that very few people actually took advantage of the deferment option. Couple that with the fact that so few actually re-qualified for next years race, the tougher standards for 2013 and I think the field will be much less competitive than 2012 was so long as you meet the standard. My 2 cents.

From Rye on Sun, Apr 29, 2012 at 19:09:37 from 174.27.118.17

Joe... Great report and another solid race. I am going to echo Steam8 on the races here in the Rockies.....you would love the temps and elevation drop..... put it on the calendar:)

From Daniel Brunson on Sun, Apr 29, 2012 at 21:23:57 from 68.14.171.105

You are a champ Joe. You delivered a solid performance as expected, and your report was very enjoyable to read. I'm proud to know you as a fellow blogger.

Since I'm already registered for the Route 66, perhaps we will meet if you decide on Tulsa in November.

From DaleG on Sun, Apr 29, 2012 at 23:07:06 from 71.199.57.238

Wow, I think you did great considering the course. I like your plan for the fall. Perhaps you should go with the November marathon, maybe the cooler temps will help.

From seeaprilrun on Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 01:26:19 from 205.172.12.229

I have to agree that this was a stronger performance. The course and conditions were tough, and your pace in the beginning was perfect on any other day. You were able to work through a rough patch and stay strong, which shows a lot of real finesse and fitness. You ARE in sub-3 shape, and you would have killed it on a flat course in good conditions.

From JG on Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 08:38:48 from 71.57.246.108

Awesome race Joe in tough conditions, kudos for staying so strong mentally! It is tough to stay strong when your ultimate goal is slipping away, but to run a sub 3:03 in those conditions is spectacular! I would say your Houston time has you a 99.9% chance of getting into Boston, no worries!

From Jake K on Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 10:10:40 from 155.100.226.54

Great run Joe - I'm glad that you are considering this a success... its really hard to race in that kind of heat/humidity. You did awesome - congrats! Sub 3 this fall, no doubt!

From Dave S on Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 10:37:05 from 69.170.115.216

Great race! That was definitely worth sub 3 in good conditions. Way to hang tough after feeling so poorly with 16 to go. You still finish out with a great time and a successful race!

From I Just Run on Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 12:43:42 from 67.79.11.242

Hey Joe,

It was good to finally meet you. It seems we were already good friends even though we hadn't met face to face. Congradulations on a very good race! I think you held it together very well. I think it's just another step forward to your 3:00 goal.

How did Danielle do? Sorry I missed you guys at the end.

BTW...Your wife is very sweet...I like her :-)

From Andrea on Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 14:04:11 from 72.37.171.52

Great job, Joe! Strong performance for sure, especially with non-ideal temperatures. Might have started out a little fast, but you were able to maintain a pretty good pace throughout. You should definitely see it as a success!

From SlowJoe on Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 17:20:34 from 69.131.141.92

Neil - makes sense, you're probably right about Boston, thanks for the reassurance.

Rye - but then what would I have to complain about??

Daniel - thanks, I appreciate it. If not Tulsa, I'm sure we'll cross paths in some OK race (because apparently there are none in Lawton).

DG - that is a big consideration, believe me. Wouldn't it be nice not to sweat the weather forecasts so much...

April - thanks. When I started struggling I actually thought about you killing it in St. George when it was 80 degrees and then I felt like a wimp. Thanks a lot! I think I just need another brutal hot summer of torture to get conditioned again.

JG - appreciate it - I owe it all to fear of embarrassment!

Jake - feels silly to complain about upper 60s after what you guys had in Boston, but thanks!

Dave - thanks for the encouragement. I guess I'll never know what would've happened but it's nice to hear others say what I am hoping is the case too.

IJr - great to meet you and the family too. Danielle did not have her best race either...just one of those days. I will definitely tell her you said that!

Andrea - thanks! Yeah, 1 step back but two steps forward maybe. that made no sense. But you know what I mean, definitely pulling some positives from it.

From Kelli on Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 18:41:30 from 71.219.98.16

I think we can all relate to a slower time that we felt better about! It is good we are all runners and understand!

You are so going to get sub-3, I never watched anyone so ready (aside from April, and she did it!) Looking forward to that day almost as much as you.

Great job on the race!

From baldnspicy on Tue, May 01, 2012 at 14:26:42 from 167.164.3.140

Not much more to say that hasn't already been said. Great job, Joe! You'll rock the sub-3 next time!

From TexasLindsey on Tue, May 01, 2012 at 20:03:08 from 70.253.128.48

Great Race Report!! You're on the cusp of serious PR! What do you think about this race as a possible:

http://www.panhandlemarathon.com/

$60 full marathon in Lubbock on Sept 23..

It's Lubbock so it'll be flat. 58F average low for that time of year.

It's so hard to find a good race for summer training. The northern marathons are high altitude and have hills... Lubbock could be good...

From SlowJoe on Thu, May 03, 2012 at 18:06:33 from 69.131.141.92

Kelli - thank, funny that you had the same kind of race as well, although yours sounded way tougher!

BnS - thanks man, good luck in your training.

TL - I got an email about that one, but I feel like it'll probably be really hot, especially if we get another summer like 2011. Definitely agree it's hard to find a Fall marathon down here. I'm guessing you're looking for something earlier than white rock...

From Kelli on Thu, May 03, 2012 at 18:38:31 from 71.219.98.16

I am just good at making things sound tough. ;o)

From Burt on Fri, May 04, 2012 at 19:36:46 from 72.223.82.180

Great job Joe. Can't wait to see your next marathon over 4 hours. What? You said there won't be a 3 in front of it, and everybody just assumes that means sub 3.
