43F, NNE 10 mph.  6:43 AP.

Wasted a good $75 on this one.  The second half of the race was really bad and had to slow it to a jog for the last couple miles.  My legs tightened up worse than they ever have at the end of a full marathon.  It was kind of embarrassing getting passed by so many people at the end.  I hope that this has more to do with getting over an illness and less to do with me being in terrible shape.

Sorry for the bad race. Hopefully you can get over this illness soon!

From flatlander on Sun, Oct 07, 2012 at 18:27:55 from 76.31.26.153

Weird stuff happens sometimes, but this one seems pretty cut and dried -- for me at least it is really hard to get past an illness of any kind for anything longer than a 10K. Still a very respectable time, by the way.

From Burt on Sun, Oct 07, 2012 at 18:31:02 from 72.223.86.148

You came in 12th place. I'm guessing you must've been in the lead to get "passed by so many people at the end."

From Neil on Sun, Oct 07, 2012 at 21:22:41 from 71.220.150.219

On the upside, you ran a great 10 mile tempo for your November marathon. :) Seriously, I hope you recover soon and get what you need out of these last few weeks of training. Take it easy and get well soon.

From I Just Run on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 08:35:34 from 67.79.11.242

Sorry for the mishap Joe. I can't imagine this was from lack of conditioning, you've been running strong. I wouldn't consider this waste of $75 but a good experience, another race under your belt and preparation for you're bigger races coming up. Besides that you now have another trophy to display! :-)

From Jake K on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 09:07:32 from 155.100.226.191

Getting sick just takes a lot out of you. Even when the symptoms go away, your body isn't recovered for a hard, long effort yet. Sorry it didn't go well, but I don't know if there is anything else you really could have done (other than not get sick)

From SlowJoe on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 10:33:48 from 69.131.141.92

Andrea - thanks, I think I am on the mend now.

Flat - yeah, feeling ok and running ok are not necessarily bound together after being sick I guess.

Burt - ok, I guess I only got passed by 4 or 5 but it felt like the entire town!

Neil - yeah pretty much 11 @ MP or better...can't complain about it as a workout

IJR - you're right, I forgot the money for the babysitter. It was over $100! But yeah, I had some decent runs a few weeks ago so this is probably nothing to sweat about.

Jake - I think next time the kids get sick I will just pen them up outside to quarantine them. Don't call social services, ok?

From allie on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 12:50:23 from 161.38.218.168

sorry about the tough race -- illness can take some time to bounce back from and racing puts quite a strain on your body. as mentioned above, you still got a good workout in (even though it probably felt terrible). rest up and you'll bounce back. the fitness is there.

From seeaprilrun on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 13:53:56 from 68.102.158.169

well. beats my half marathon pr. :) You've had a lot of great mileage and consistency, definitely blame it on illness! I totally agree with everything Allie just said.

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 16:07:29 from 67.172.235.55

We all know it is NOT that you are in terrible shape! Hope you are feeling better soon, forget about the darn $75!

From joebell1981 on Tue, Oct 09, 2012 at 13:23:49 from 108.59.48.1

Def. due to illness, Joe. Don't sweat it. Good race up to the end. A similar thing happened to me in Geist Half this year. On pace for a PR and then my body remembered that I had been sick the days before... sucks, sry to hear it happened to you.

From Jason D on Tue, Oct 09, 2012 at 22:15:23 from 24.1.80.94

You got in some miles at a bit faster than marathon pace, Joe. Your medium longs and longs have been 30ish seconds slower than this pace, so its not a matter of fitness. You've got a few weeks. Keep a respirator handy in case the kiddos are struck by illness again.

From DaleG on Tue, Oct 09, 2012 at 22:34:57 from 152.216.11.5

Oh man, what a bummer. I know the feeling of getting passed at the end all too well. About 200 or 300 people passed me the last 6 miles of the St. George Marathon and there was nothing I could do about it. But we all know you're in terrific shape. You'll do better at the next one.

From SlowJoe on Wed, Oct 10, 2012 at 07:35:29 from 155.219.241.10

allie - thanks, sometimes I have a hard time looking at the big picture

april - illness it is. gotta put the blame somewhere other than with myself.

kelli - tough to be a cheap runner!

joe - sounds like about what happened to me - felt like the right pace until about halfway into it.

jason - definitely a good workout, if nothing else.

dale - it's a terrible feeling, isn't it! congrats on finishing though.
