61F, NE 14-18 mph.  I ran our little town's local 5K(ish) race today.  Got schooled by a couple high school kids on the xc team and ran pretty mediocre myself, but ok for 13 days post-marathon.

5:58 - tailwind

6:05

6:19 - headwind

1:22 for 0.23 miles (5:52 pace)

All in all, AP was 6:06, so more like a 19-flat on a correct-distance course.  The headwind mile killed me.  I have a long way to go before I'll get close to sub-18.  Slogging through the summer at 8-min pace isn't going to make it happen for me this year (unlike last year), I will have to spend a lot more time at 3k-5k pace this summer.  My speed/VO2 max has deteriorated to nothing!  There's a 10K pretty close by next weekend; I think I will run it too.  Gotta quit being such a speed wimp...

SWEET 5k!!! I was looking at your mile paces and then your overall and I was confused there for a minute! That was quite a bit long for a 5k, I am pretty sure you would have been under 19.

Way to school the high school kids---just tell them how fast your age graded race would have been! Right?? We have to use our age for something!

Joe I run a 5K every 4th of July where the XC teams are at. They smoke me, but I always place in my age so they think Im so fast old guy. I think it was a pretty solid 5 considering a LONG course and how close you were to your marathon.

From Jake K on Sat, May 12, 2012 at 15:00:14 from 67.182.215.126

Ahhh long 5Ks are the worst! In this day and age, is it really that hard to measure 3.1 miles? :-)

Good effort for less than 2 weeks after the marathon. It takes some time to re-train the brain especially to push it hard like you have to do in 5Ks and 10Ks. Some pace work and jumping into a bunch of shorter races will definitely give you some big improvements in that area.

MAYBE he made a wrong turn and added on???

From SlowJoe on Sat, May 12, 2012 at 15:13:17 from 69.131.141.92

Kelli - The HS boys beat me, but I crushed this 12-year old girl though....IN YOUR FACE, 12-year old!

Dan - I guess I am twice their age...wow that sucks. When did that happen?!

Jake - I think some brain re-training is definitely required; I've been in coast-mode all year

From Andrea on Sat, May 12, 2012 at 15:35:34 from 67.182.215.126

Two weeks after your marathon, I wouldn't expect the legs to be able to fire for a 5k yet. Given that, this was a great effort!

From Neil on Sat, May 12, 2012 at 16:39:46 from 97.121.40.61

Solid effort so close to your Mary. FWIW, I haven't finished a 5k in almost 3 yrs. The last one I did was in my mid August and the course was at least .2 miles long. It sucked 100x worse than any marathon, just didn't last as long.

From allie on Sat, May 12, 2012 at 17:40:07 from 97.126.217.165

nice job, joe. you ran very well -- sorry for the long course though. the 5k torture should never be extended.

we should jump in a race and try to push (kill) each other to a sub-18.

From Rye on Sat, May 12, 2012 at 17:40:45 from 174.27.116.87

Nice Joe.... leave it to some kids with fast twitch muscle fibers...... I'd be happy with a sub 20 but I'm not you speedy.

From flatlander on Sat, May 12, 2012 at 20:52:51 from 76.31.26.153

Joe, great job as usual, especially so close to a marathon.

From SlowJoe on Sun, May 13, 2012 at 12:55:59 from 69.131.141.92

Andrea - thanks, hoping it is more the marathon, and less that I'm just that behind in speed.

Neil - Didn't 5K's used to be fun? They are pure pain from the first mile now...

allie - good idea, I'm going to need lots of help. Lots of help.

Rye - I closed quite a bit to the second place kid, but when I couldn't catch him by the final quarter-mile, I knew he'd be gone. I have no kick!

Flat - thanks - allie said I have a month's worth of excuses after a marathon so I need to race a lot right now before I can switch to using the summer heat as an excuse.

From derhammer on Sun, May 13, 2012 at 20:47:26 from 70.113.125.159

SJ - good job man. The good news is that you know what you need to do to increase the speed! Too bad you don't live in Austin, ;-)

From baldnspicy on Mon, May 14, 2012 at 22:36:28 from 141.0.10.170

Way to go, Joe. Proud of ya and the great effort! You're my hero for not letting that little girl take you. Watch out for her next year, though. Girls/women hold grudges for years...decades even.
