73F, S 16-21 mph.  sunny.  really sunny.

I drove up to Chickaska (about 30 min) to do this 10k.  Once again this distance plagues me.  On top of the heat and wind, it was pretty hilly.  The good news is there was a 5k and 10k and they were paying actual money for 1st-3rd.  I knew that would draw some fast people from OKC, but was hoping they'd be spread out over both races and maybe I could sneak in and grab some cash.  Sure enough, both winners of the OKC marathon this year showed up, Jacob Buhler and Camille Herron.  So at the starting line I was looking around and other than Jacob there was one other guy with shorty shorts who looked fast.  So I figured it would be a battle for 3rd to get that last $50.

The 2 fast guys took off and ended up running 32 and 33 for the race.  They disappeared pretty soon and it was me and gray shirt for the first mile.  He sounded like he was breathing hard already so I passed him but he stuck close by.  I started feeling really hot and drained already by mile 2.  At the halfway point he was still there, and I was sure I was being used as his rabbit, but he slowly faded (worse than me) and I ran the second half of the race alone.  Could not even manage half-marathon pace out there; it just felt like I was shuffling along, and I just kinda slogged it in unceremoniously.

I invented a new kind of run today.  You've heard of the progressive run, this was a "regressive run."  I'm sure it will catch on everywhere pretty soon.

6:15, 6:28, 6:34, 6:36, 6:41, 6:35, 1:32 for 0.23.

But, of course I got my 50 bucks - the first time I have won actual money in a race.  Past prizes I've received have included a jar of gumballs and a PetSmart coffee mug.  So it was all worth it!

Regressive run...sounds pretty good. If it will get me $50, I'll try it.

You have also won a massage and academy gift cards. I can see how you may have forgotten the gift cards as I spent them pretty quickly on things for myself. A supportive wife deserves some awards, too!

Burt - try it. 60% of the time, it works every time.

SJG - hey, what a blast from the past! Sorry I already spent the money this time.

Oh sure, the guy who is part of the problem now gets a payday ;)

Just kidding, nice job Joe- that was a tough test so soon after the marathon!

You realize that once you accept money that you are what we call a professional! It's been nice knowing ya.

From Jake K on Sat, May 19, 2012 at 16:58:14 from 67.182.215.126

you have to change your name to PROjoe now that you've won some prize money! congrats!

From Neil on Sat, May 19, 2012 at 17:06:10 from 97.121.40.61

Nice effort. The fact that you consider 6:30 pace "shuffling along" is a testament to how big time you've become.;)

PS- as your unofficial legal counsel I must advise you that the IRS routinely monitors these local 10k events. Proceed accordingly.

From DaleG on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 00:01:54 from 71.199.57.238

Neil, you're right...I work for the IRS.

Nice job, Joe. By the way, I am the king of regressive runs.

From SlowJoe on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 09:05:42 from 69.131.141.92

Dan - thanks...I'm rich!

Rye - Rye who? Do I know you?

Jake - yep, I'm quitting my job on Monday now that I have this new source of income.

Neil - Thanks for the free legal advice! I guess "shuffling" was not the right choice of words; still fast, just nowhere near 10k pace.

DG - ah, so you already have the patent. Do I get to deduct the cost of entry, the gas to get there, tolls on the turnpike, mileage, etc? In that case, I think my profit was about 25 cents. I'll send you a check.

From allie on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 11:06:35 from 174.23.154.194

congrats. you are officially a professional runner now, but unfortunately that means you are no longer eligible to compete in the NCAA.

nice job -- even with the regression, your splits look fine to me. 10ks are evil!

From SlowJoe on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 11:55:35 from 69.131.141.92

allie - I know, I had to call up a bunch of NCAA track coaches yesterday to tell them I could not accept a scholarship offer to run at their schools. Then they asked me who I was, and it got more confusing from there.

From Bec on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 18:44:25 from 68.206.133.141

Great race! I don't think you are too slow looking at your times. Congrats on the dough.

From Kelli on Tue, May 22, 2012 at 14:11:36 from 71.219.97.214

YOU WON MONEY!!!! That is my dream, I do not even care if it is just $10! Nicely done.

I am a big fan of the regressive run.

From SlowJoe on Tue, May 22, 2012 at 18:27:40 from 69.131.141.92

Bec - thanks - the reverse psychology of the name is what works on me

Kelli - you should've come down to to Oklahoma (although I know you had MUCH better things to do). A 50-something 10k won money in the women's division.

From Kelli on Tue, May 22, 2012 at 20:48:38 from 71.219.97.214

WHAT???? Dang, I ran the wrong race.
