My foot stated hurting while just walking today, so I think it's time for a short break.  Pushing out my first 20-miler tomorrow seems dumber and dumber the more I think about it.  So my tentative plan for now is to take the rest of the week off and start running again on Sunday with an "easy" 40-mile week, which is probably still plenty of miles for me to keep improving with.  Hopefully 3 days off plus a light week of running will do the trick, and not cause any loss of fitness.  If I want to run a marathon I gotta get to the starting line...

Dang! Sorry about your foot! I would suggest slowing down the pace for the bulk of your mileage except for a few days a week when you "push" the pace. It's a fine line to add both mileage and intensity all at once.

Thanks April, you are right - I was going into uncharted waters with mileage and still keeping a high intensity. I think I will just hang out around 55-60 the rest of the way (last week was 58) and still try to get in a couple 20-milers at slower paces. 1 MP run/week and maybe tempo every other week, we'll see...

I have to say i agree with April! I spent the majority of my running miles this year going unbelievably slow (it took some getting used to) AND it was the first year i did not get injured and I PR'd in every race.

Take it easy and enjoy some time off. I am SURE your fitness will be just fine. After a few days off I do feel a bit sluggish, BUT it comes right back after a few days.

Ditto on everything above. For me, I can get a lot done on slow miles with just a little bit of the fast stuff worked in.

Thanks for the advice guys. I wish I enjoyed easy runs more; they are very unsatisfying to me for some reason, but my poor legs and feet obviously feel differently! Foot is feeling better now, and I'm looking forward to running tomorrow.
