Decided no run today, going for some overall recovery.  Still have a lingering sore throat but it's almost gone.  I think I probably had some kind of infection, looking back, since it took 11+ days to go away.

But now what to do?  4 weeks of training, then 2 weeks of taper until the full (maybe 1 taper week is all I will need now?)  Do I pile up the miles real quick?  Do I take it easy for a week, then do a bunch of speed work and tempos?  Seriously, I'm asking...

Here's my two cents, for what its worth...

Don't worry about getting up to "peak" mileage - shoot for what your average mileage has been over the past 2 months or so... about 60-65 mpw. That's a volume you can handle w/out risking breaking down (hopefully). 3 weeks at that level, then a 7-8 day taper.

Stay away from the true speed work. Its just going to teach your muscles to use fuel inefficiently, and that will be bad news about 2 hours into the marathon. Run tempos at marathon pace. Resist the urge to go much faster. Work on getting your legs dialed into the pace you'll be targeting. Figure out how to run it w/out even looking at your watch.

I'd do one more good long run 3 weeks out, then a longer tempo run 2 weeks out (that will end up being a "medium long run" w/ warmup and cooldown).

Good stuff Jake, thanks, that is what I will do. I get what you are saying about possibly breaking down on the original peak mileage I had planned, and I wouldn't have thought about that side effect of speed work, but it makes sense. That was definitely worth more than 2 cents!

I'm with you on the illness. 11 days seems like an eternity when your not feeling good.

IJR directed me over here and I am so grateful.

Jake - thanks for the great advice, just what I am looking for.

Slowjoe - glad you are starting to feel better. Best of luck!

Looks like Jake has you covered. Speed work does seem like a bad idea (strides if you feel like spinning your tires). A spike in mileage could leave you injured and fatigued.

I wonder if folks taper too much and too early, but I don't have any support for this (neither research nor experience).

Rye - hope you are starting to feel better as well.

Jody - thanks, and good luck at the MCM, should be awesome!

Jason - I definitely tapered too much last marathon; felt myself peak about a 7-10 days early so I won't be doing that again...

Glad I came here, Jake's advice seems right on. I am supposed to start my taper in two weeks, but I think I am going to keep going with the MP miles until 7 to 10 days out, that makes so much more sense for me based on how I have felt in past marathons.
