74F, 85%, SSE 17-23 mph.  7:18 AP.  Goal was to get in 20 min @ LT pace (shooting for 6:20/mile).

7 easy, then a 5K in 19:29, then a short cooldown back to my house.

Splits were 6:19, 6:23, 6:09, 37.  Full disclosure: the first 2 miles were neutral, but the last mile dropped 40 feet.  Otherwise I would have been hurtin' a lot more.  This was hard.  Maybe too much warmup when it's already warm out.

Oh and I pulled a tick off my leg after a "pit stop" in a ditch on the way out.

Nice paces! I'll be chasing you on friday with a similar run :-)

My Kenyan friend suggested doing these time trials with no warm up. I can't say I agree with that, but I don't think 7 miles is really necessary either. I always tell myself to stick to the intent of the workout. Over-do the warm up and then the workout suffers and you haven't achieved the stimulus you were after.

IJR - good luck at the roping event this weekend!

DH - yeah I could tell 7 was too much because I was already smoked after the first half mile of tempo, but maybe it's good to get to that lactate flowing soon too (more time under duress?). On the other hand, you don't get the speed/turnover that you would with a 2-3 mile warmup. I will probably experiment with a shorter warmup soon.

Aren't marathon's just 20 mi. warmups for a super hard 10 k ? :) JK - nice job on the tough weeks with long and 2xhard workouts. I think you're overall body of work in the recent heat will pay dividends this fall.

I think it goes both ways. You said your focus was the marathon, so that speed work on tired legs certainly pays off (ala the tin-man work outs), but if you are doing just pure speed work, then you do not need that much. All that being said, I am much more interested in that tick.

JB1981 - good point - I do love the extended "warm-up" when ramping up for a marathon, but am usually happy to just survive during summer

Dan - let me follow up then: I actually didn't notice him for a couple miles - thought it was just a sticker burr (I had a lot of those stuck to me) but I couldn't just brush it off and it felt like it was pinching my leg hair so I stopped to pull it off and it was a friggin tick. Pretty much the entire run after that, I felt like I had them crawling all over me. I guess I didn't though, because I couldn't find any more when I got home and I spent a good 10 minutes looking!
