69F, SSW 17-25 mph.  Hot and windy this morning but I still had a great tempo run.  8 easy, then 6 tempo, followed by 2 cooldown.  You better believe I set myself up for success again, taking out the headwind up front and leaving all tailwind/crosswind for the tempo part.

8 easy - 7:41 AP.

6 tempo - 6:24 AP (6:39, 6:29, 6:30, 6:26, 6:24, 5:57)

2 cooldown - 7:43, 7:36

Overall for 16 miles - 7:12 AP

Pretty excited.  I really clawed my way down to sub-6 on the last mile, pretty hard effort, but sometimes you just need to know you can do it.  The 6:24 average is even inside McMillan's suggested tempo pace range for me, albeit at the slow end.  As warm as it was this morning, I'll take it!

One more 80+ mile week then I will start to throttle back a bit.  In one week, I'll do 22 w/ 12 MP; that'll be my last MP run.

Wow, that is super. Can't believe that sub-6 for the last tempo mile. That is some serious running. Can't wait for your 22 (12). I never do too well on those, maybe you will inspire me.

Awesome tempo run Joe! You are inspiring me. I only wish you lived closer so I could train with someone who is faster than me.

Flat - thanks, yeah the 12 MP will be tough, given the hills around here. It was nice doing the tempo in flat Abilene.

Daniel - Thanks - One thing I'm definitely missing is a good training partner to suffer along with. Don't know about Tulsa, but the running community around Lawton is non-existent from what I can tell.

From Daniel Brunson on Mon, Apr 02, 2012 at 06:17:52 from 68.14.171.105

The running community is pretty big in Tulsa. We have two great running shoe stores each with training groups. I have a running buddy that runs a majority of my long runs with me. In 2010 we we ran pretty close to the same pace, but he switched to a barefoot shoe in 2011 and his pace is still recovering.

From Daniel Brunson on Mon, Apr 02, 2012 at 06:22:45 from 68.14.171.105

The only problem with all of Tulsa's available training groups was that the last time I checked we did not have any that paced a BQ time in my age group.

Daniel, not to hijack Joe's blog, but had to laugh about your friend who switched to barefoot shoes and lost his mojo. I did the same thing and am always looking for excuses, so this one is a great add. Hope all is well in Tulsa. Also hope you get to run with Joe, but if you do don't worry about his speed. He is extremely fast but extremely polite. He will run whatever pace you wish and make you think that he is struggling.

Awesome job as always.

The first thing my eyes saw when I opened your blog was the 5:57...Wow, what a great run. You're in a perfect spot to run a Sub-3 at OKC!

Great finish to that tempo - dropping the hammer!

From SlowJoe on Tue, Apr 03, 2012 at 12:03:49 from 155.219.241.10

Daniel - dang, too bad about your buddy getting into the barefoot craze!

Flat - you forgot to mention I bring crummy weather wherever I go

dh - thanks

IJR - thanks, I don't feel much improvement from Houston, but you never know...

Jake - thanks
