The weather ended up being 31 degrees, winds 22 gusting to 35 from the north, ~18 degree wind chill.  But I already paid, and I've never run an actual 5K so I never thought about skipping it.

The race started out going north so the first mile was almost all direct headwind, the second mile was about neutral overall and the last was a tailwind.  I was happy at first that we would get the brutal headwind mile out of the way first but it ended up being my undoing.  Splits were 7:09, 7:24, 7:20, then I never stopped the watch.

The race was small (guessing 50 people or so).  After a minute or so, I was in 4th place, where I would stay the entire time (like I said, small race).  I knew I needed 7:05s to break 22 but I shouldn't have tried to get it on that first mile into gale-force winds!  Anyway I was jelly after that.  The last two-thirds were total misery but I still gave it everything.  I remember taking my gloves off and holding them in the last mile and it felt like my hands barely had the strength to grasp them!  I'm not sure what kind of effort that 7:09 was worth into that wind but it was obviously more than my fitness allowed - I guess it was like sprinting a mile and then expecting to race 2 more right afterward.  I've run 3-mile tempos at a faster overall pace than my race today - oh well, lesson learned!

I don't even know if they're even going to have official results online but if they do I'll update; I think I got 1st or 2nd in my age group but I didn't hang around; it was a bit cold anyway.

**Right after lunch (ouch) I did 2 lazy TM miles to get to 30 for the week.  Still kind of disappointed about that time but now that I've thought about it maybe it was just dumb racing instead of bad fitness.  I shouldn't have tried to stay on goal pace running into a brick wall of wind and expect to recover.  Ah well...  I'll be smarter for the 10K next month.

***Last update - they posted results and the 22:32 was correct.  I was #1 in my AG...out of 2 total!  #4 of 44 racing that day.  There were 21 no-shows, maybe the horizontal sleet scared people away.

Great job! 7:09 into that north wind is a brutal opening mile! I fought the same wind today, although I did as much east/west running as I could to keep side winds because it was like running into a brick wall. If it weren't for that nasty wind I bet you would have easily broken 22. Way to keep your pace anyway--you didn't slow down much at all!

Nice job Joe. We can't control the conditions of the race, but you can take what you've learned for the next one. Keep it up!

Thanks April and Burt, if anything the weather gave me a nice, pretty excuse to use for not hitting my goal. And I will use it shamelessly!

You did great, way to shed the gloves and go after it. I think 5Ks are a separate science, both as to training and strategy. I haven't heard about many people who focus on them. Those are fine splits, heck you got 4th, nothing to feel bad about. Can't believe that wind. We had almost none here this morning, although it was predicted at 20 mph.

From SlowJoe on Sat, Mar 20, 2010 at 15:27:30 from 184.79.24.255

Thanks flat, you're right I haven't felt my lungs burn like that in a long time.

It's not whether you win or lose. It's how you lay the blame.

That weather is a BUMMER!!! Sorry, it does totally affect a race!

From Rye on Sat, Mar 20, 2010 at 19:28:23 from 75.174.11.160

Sounds like a nasty weather day. What a great learning experience...lol I do like Burts thought. 5k is a challenging race. Run hard enough but not too hard to bonk the last mile..Your split times were great. Conditions have to be great to pr in the 5k. Great race, you will break that 22min mark soon.

From SlowJoe on Sat, Mar 20, 2010 at 20:16:26 from 184.79.24.255

I'm gonna steal that quote, Burt - sums it up for me.

Kelli - thanks, that's my hope.

Rye - yeah it's funny the wind makes it look like I ran smart splits, doesn't it? Without wind I'm thinking the last mile would be a good 90 seconds slower than the first.

From Burt on Sat, Mar 20, 2010 at 22:36:53 from 98.177.220.145

I stole it from the Family Circus. I'm always trying to see who I can blame besides myself ;) But you should be stoked about 4th place. Woo hoo!

From Tracy on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 15:24:31 from 67.175.121.130

Those are pretty great splits for such heavy winds--the effort was there, but sounds like you'll take away some good lessons for the next one.

You can always impress people when you tell them you got 4th. You don't have to tell them how many people ran :)
