45F, N 11 mph.  Great race for me.  The wind that I was scared of was not too bad, really light for this time of year.  My stretch goal was to break 1:25 and I actually did it this time.

It was about a 2-hour drive to Wichita Falls, so got up early to make the drive.  Did about a mile to warm up, then lined up at the front since there were only about a hundred participants.

Miles 1-5 - 6:29, 6:28, 6:30, 6:32, 6:20.  The race was mostly flat and had a lot of crosswind which was great.  Mile 1, however, was downhill and downwind, which meant mile 13 would suck.  I took it easy and was in 5th after mile 1.  After that I was feeling good, so I held on to a 6:30-ish pace and moved into the lead after mile 3.  This was actually kind of a nice, scenic course around Lake Wichita.  I was just following the golf cart guy and enjoying my lead.

Miles 6-10 - 6:35, 6:18, 6:20, 6:31, 6:28.  Got to the turnaround just a bit early, and I guessed that the course would be short, but we ended up taking a slightly modified route back.  After the turnaround, I got to get a look at my lead.  Not huge, maybe 20 seconds.  The guy in second said, "You're killing me!" as we passed each other.  Uh huh.  Well, he was a little too close for comfort so I did a little surge for about 10 minutes through miles 7 and 8, running 6:15-6:20 pace to make sure he was dropped.  I think it worked.  Miles 9 and 10 had really slippery gravel (this was the modified return) and I spend half the time running on the grass since the footing sucked.

Miles 11-13 - 6:25, 6:16, 6:38.  Finally around the 10.5 mark, there was a turn back on to asphault right after an aid station.  Right after I hit the street, I heard cheers for the 2nd place guy, who I thought was long gone.  He was close.  Hello motivation.  I turned on the jets and ran my fastest mile in mile 12.  That would be the mile he passed me.  Not gradually either, there was absolutely nothing I could do about it.  I just said "great push," and let him go.  The last mile was as brutal as I thought it would be, uphill and into the strongest wind of the morning, it seemed.  I ended up losing by about 25 seconds but what could I do?  Turns out it was that guy's first HM, so he was probably a lot faster than me but just ran conservatively at the beginning since he'd never raced one.

I measured it at 13.00 miles, the winner measured it at 13.05.  AP was 6:27 by my garmin, and the course was not certified.  If you do the math, I would have run 1:24:31 for 13.11, so we'll call that the new PR.

I'm pretty pumped, this is better than I thought I could do.  I've had pretty much no good workouts since Houston, and 6:30 pace has felt terribly hard until just now.  I think this race is probably better than my 3:01 in Houston.  Definitely think I'm on my way to sub-3...

That is terrific! What a race, can hardly believe how fast you are getting. Congratulations again, really excited for what you will be doing this year, as if you haven't done enough already.

Great race today! Glad that 6:30 pace is starting to feel better - great sign. You're definitely on the right track for the sub-3!

JOE! Wow oh wow! Amazing! I cannot believe it! Yes I can! Way to push and surge and hold the guy off. You didn't slow down at all! You are easily on track for sub-3, easily! Congrats on such a big race and great time! I am starting to think I need to check out this Pfitz stuff!

From I Just Run on Sat, Mar 03, 2012 at 19:06:02 from 12.162.141.2

I just had to laugh as I read your report. I knew you were going to kill this race if the conditions were good. Way to go TurboJoe...!!! I'm your fan and will be eagerly awaiting the next race :-) Maybe I can get an autograph when I finally meet you :-)

Great race, congrats! That guy was definitely sandbagging. No matter, you're progress is steady and remarkable. Very inspiring.

Thanks Flat, definitely hoping to see more gains this year.

Andrea - thanks, I guess that means I need to run faster tempos...dang.

dh - thanks - I hadn't seen any evidence of improvement but I guess sometimes you have to wait until a race comes up.

April - let me know and I can mail you the book if you want...I've read it like 3 times. But really I think I've just been lucky to stay uninjured (knock on wood) and still rack up the miles.

IJR - funny story about autographs. As I went up to get my bib, this one lady asked me which event I was doing. Before I could answer, the other lady said "it must be the half, he looks fast and has an old race shirt on." I said, "oh, yeah, I'm kind of a big deal." I think they thought I was serious until I told them "no autographs."

Neil - thanks - I looked up the guy who won and found a 17:21 5k. So, yeah, sandbagger!

allie - hope so - maybe a nice taper will just about put me there

Gotta love the surge at Miles 7 & 8 when already cruising at a 6:30 pace. I think I would have gone into an all out sprint & then tried to jump on the back of the golf cart! :) Great race, Joe!!!

From Burt on Sun, Mar 04, 2012 at 16:37:43 from 72.223.93.158

Geez! How fast was that guy's last mile? 5:20? I suppose you could have thrown out some spike strips.

From Dan on Sun, Mar 04, 2012 at 20:03:09 from 24.209.83.20

Holy cow man, we told ya you would be sub 1:25...so did you pump your fists over the finish line like Houston?

From SlowJoe on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 09:17:18 from 74.195.74.62

JG - yeah it was like a horse with a carrot on a stick in front of it...could never quite get to it.

Burt - I looked at the official results and he actually beat me by more than I thought, almost a minute. Definitely threw down some 5's at the end.

Dan - nope, not this time. saving the next excessive celebration for sub-3.

From Jake K on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 09:49:32 from 155.100.226.54

Great race - you are definitely on the way to Sub 3 hours!!

Uphill and into the wind on the last mile - ouch that is rough! If I ever design a race course, I would never let that happen :-)

You've got like 2 months until OKC - I think you definitely have the time to make the next jump. 1:24 right now suggests you are absolutely on the right track.

From SlowJoe on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 19:45:22 from 74.195.74.62

Jake - thanks for the vote of confidence; it would definitely be nice to get another little fitness boost since OKC is a little tougher course than Houston was.
