57F, NE 10 mph.  Happy Easter, everyone.  This was my last long MP run for this training cycle.  I had yet to try a tempo run here at my Oklahoma home - it's pretty hilly here, with basically no flat stretches, so I wasn't sure how it would go.  10 easy, followed by 12 MP.

10 easy - 7:30 AP.

12 MP - 6:45 AP.  Splits were 7:01, 6:50, 6:44, 6:42, 6:46, 6:52, 6:44, 6:44, 6:44, 6:47, 6:34, 6:30.

22 total - 7:05 AP.

Frantic.  That would be the word to describe this run.  I'd push hard uphill to avoid losing too much time, then have to sprint downhill to make up for lost time, then repeat.  So I never got into a groove with it, it was like a 12-mile sprint, but it was still a success.  OKC won't be this hilly, so I think I'm in good shape.  I unwittingly picked a route with 4 miles of gravel, rocky roads.  Here are the rocks I had to pry out of my A5's after my run:

The holes in the bottom of the sole work great keeping your feet dry when it's raining, but it comes at a cost!

And so ends a 5-week, 400+ mile blitz.  I'm not that much faster now than I was before Houston, but I just need a 71-second PR on a slightly tougher course.  No eye-popping workouts this time, just lots of miles.  We'll see if it was enough!

Awesome run Joe. You are going to rock it in the city. I live in a pretty hilly area too. Sometimes I forget how hilly it is until someone comes running with me for the first time. My trails never fail to elicit comments on the hills.

That's another great LR/Tempo! Miles make champions. The marathon is an aerobic event - even if you aren't faster, if you are STRONGER, you'll be good to go.

Type As are totally rock magnets.

Great run Joe, I have to agree on the stronger comments. You are looking good for OKC.

7:05 pace for 22 miles??? With 10 lbs of rock hitching a ride on your shoes???

From Neil on Sun, Apr 08, 2012 at 21:12:45 from 97.121.40.61

Great workout! The type of mileage you've been putting in has a dividend and OKC is where you collect. Congrats on making it to the taper.

Great tempo run! The fact that your last miles are the fastest is an awesome sign.

Looking good Joe! I think you have it made!

Mile 22: 6:30? Are you taking steroids?!

Great run, excited to see you crush OKC!

From SlowJoe on Tue, Apr 10, 2012 at 06:22:01 from 69.131.141.92

Daniel - yeah, I am definitely on the lookout for a flat area for future tempo runs

Jake - thanks, I am definitely going to test that theory out this time

Dan - thanks, feeling good about it.

Burt - that's a good point, I wonder how much all those rocks weigh!

Neil - hoping to - I like the stock reference, since I haven't realized many capital gains yet...waiting for that quarterly dividend!

ACorn - thanks, I think I naturally sandbag juuuust a little on these runs.

April - thanks!

JG - not quite steroids, my PED is caffeine. Good luck at Boston!

You rock, Joe. Good luck at OKC!

I'm late to the game, but super run. You have done everything possible for this marathon, it should be a great one.
