Good training. You probably could do well on 6 miles a day until Tuesday next week, then drop it to 4. A runner that is runs less mileage should reduce his mileage by a smaller percentage. E.g somebody who runs 120 miles a week can cut down to 60 during the taper, and he will not lose any fitness while gaining a lot of fuel storage from the taper. However, if you cut down from 30 to 15, you will lose fitness quite a bit, and you might actually lose fuel over two weeks instead of gaining it like you expected.

Hi

I'm following an intermediate progam recommended to me on Hal Higdon's website.

http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/inter1.html

I'm reluctant to amend what I'm doing. I've got about 5 runs left (Sat, Sun, Tue, Wed, Sat) before the race totalling around 20 miles and i've cut out all the "extras" in my diet to keep the weight down and the carbs going in. Do you think that is OK?

I am not a big fan of pre-written programs. I do not think even the most knowledgeable coach in the world could write a program that would work well for everybody. Hal Higdon did not see your training when he wrote the program. Note that he says his program is only a guideline, it does not have to be followed precisely. That said, I do not think two straight days of full rest is good for anybody even when tapering. You should go out and jog a couple of miles really slow to get the heart and the legs going. I think one of the biggest mistakes the low-mileage runners make before a marathon is overtaper. It is not effective because there is not much to taper from. So all you get is a loss of fitness and muscle tone.

thanks Sasha. I think you and I are starting from very different points, but I will take your advice on board. I was contemplating taking some small jogs/runs next week in the gap just to reduce the tension!

I'm actually feeling a little feverish today so that may dictate my training over the next couple of days anyway :(
