Having been unwell and missed some training, plus having trained quite hard this week I wasn't expecting great things, but once I got down to Hastings seafront I had a good feeling about the race.

The weather was beautiful and having done the route before I felt very comfortable. The first 5 miles is steep uphill and then the remainder of the race is downhill or level on the whole.

Didn't push too hard but still did my planned marathon pace comfortably on the uphills and faster on the downhills so came in at a time >5m faster than before.

Very happy :)

(then to pub with family for smashing pub lunch and a guinness!!!)

Good work. I think it would be a very realistic goal to double your half marathon in the marathon.

Some questions to better understand your challenges and abilities:

How tall are you? How much do you weigh? How much did you weigh at the age of 17-18? What is the fastest time you've ever run in 100 meters? How fast can you run 100 meters now?

I weigh around 72kg/160lb and have done for years. When I was 17/18 I probably weighed something like 68kg but did little exercise. I'm 5ft 10, 177cm.

For the last 10 years, I've done "casual" running, soccer and squash.

I've never done timed sprints, but would wager my sprint time is relatively slow, as it certainly was when I was at school.

as for your comment about time - i swing wildly between believing i can maintain that pace (or close) for 26, and thinking I will tail off drastically.

On Sunday morning I have a 21 miler (longest before the big day) and I think that will give me a far better idea of where I am at. My biggest plus is that so far I have had no niggling pains or injuries - my body has held up OK - which is reassuring for a first timer...

If I break four hours I will be more than jubilant!!!!!!!

Sinj: good luck at the marathon, I look forward to your race report.
