Personal:

I've been running since high school (mid-1990s) and do pretty well when I'm focused on a goal. My main problem  is running consistently when I'm NOT training for something specific. I'm an attorney, and I've been married to my husband, also a runner, for 5 1/2 years. We live in Phoenix, Arizona.  We had a beautiful baby girl, Caroline, in August 2009.

I have decided to take today off.  Work is really stressing me out, and I feel some sickness coming on.  I also don't think I can mentally handle a third day in a row of crappy runs.  Today I will live vicariously through all of the exciting race reports!

Mental rest days are very important. Take care of yourself and have a great day off.

Enjoy the day of rest. we all need them sometimes.

Hey Shauna, you are wise. It is better to give yourself a break rather than push through too hard and end up taking time off because you are sick. I would actually suggest a week of pure "running as you feel" - just run slow and do whatever you feel like, don't worry about how many miles, pace, etc. I promise if you do that you will come back feeling stronger and train better if you do. I did this for two weeks while I was in Spain and felt much better and my workouts were better as well. I don't feel that my two weeks of 40 miles hurt me at all.

I think that career/life-stress needs to be factored into our training. The risk of injury or illness is a real one, and much more debilitating than a down week or two.

I hope you eat well (note: I did not say "less", just well) and get some rest this weekend.

Ditto what the others said. Take it easy and rest up, stress can certainly do a number on running performance.
