Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Favorite Quote:

Decided to take an easy day today as a precaution, ran only 9. Had the kids take it easy as well and run fewer miles than normal. It was cold and windy, and the change from Saturday was very sudden. When the weather changes like that, the chances of picking up are cold are higher. So reduced mileage to keep the immune system going strong.

This race reminded me of the frequently told story about having to walk to school uphill in the snow both ways. On the way out we had some headwind, so I was hoping that after the first half in 18:28 I would at least be able to run 18:45 for the second half if not faster. Unfortunately, the wind turn around right around the time we did, and with about 2 miles to go started blowing with vengeance destroying all hopes of any kind of a reasonable time over the last 2 miles. So my last 5 K was a glorious 19:43 which featured a 6:30 closing mile, and that while drafting all the way behind Taylor Call who caught up to me with a bit over 1 mile to go.

Benjamin had great race, though, and ran a flat road 10 K PR in spite of the conditions. As expected, Travis Morrison (1:04/2:16 guy) pulled ahead from the field, but he was not that far ahead at the turnaround (around 15:40 or so). Benjamin had around 16:07 and was together with Fritz with Teren, Ben Smith, Nate Hornok, and Mel not too far behind. Coming back Benjamin tried to run away, and dropped everybody except Fritz. Then with a mile to go, as Fritz caught up, Benjamin got behind him, and drafted for half a mile. Then Benjamin made his final move and was able to gap Fritz by a few seconds by the finishing closing with a very impressive 5:29 mile for the conditions. He ran 16:26 for the closing 5 K, only a bit slower than Travis, who originally was hoping for 30:00, which was ambitious for a solo effort at altitude, but still should have been under 31:00 or at least close. He could only manage 32:01 in those conditions.

Jacob did OK for the first 4 miles, then started fading, and then the wind did him in, and he got 39:12. Joseph dropped back at around 2 miles, and finished in 39:39.

William, however, had a great race. Somehow in spite of the wind he was able to run 40:24, which is his new PR, and a new course record for 11 and under.
