Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

12 total. Did 1000 on the track with Bonnie at her perceived 10K effort in 4:12. The track was partially covered with snow and ice. Matthew, Mary, and Bella ran some extra distance (5.3/3.3) due the trip to the car shop. Joseph and William did only 4 due to sore throat/swollen lymph nodes. Otherwise, easy runs, usual distances.

Mesa Half, 1:21:47, 115th overall, 5th in 45-49.

I was happy that I was able to hold a more or less even pace. I was concerned that my endurance might not be sufficient to hold the pace due to the lack of long tempos and missed workouts due to the snow. I did slow down a bit towards the end, but my slowest mile was 6:22, only 8 seconds per mile slower than the average.

Kids:

Benjamin 1:12:22

Being in Austin is making him slower and slower. There was the spasm issue again. He did somehow run the last mile in 5:01, though. He responds to high-speed tempos, without those his nervous system unlearns how the balance the body. So he starts getting those strange spasms. But he has not found anywhere in Austin to do this type of training. I am telling him he needs to move now if he wants to have any hope of an OTQ.

Jacob 1:17:11 PR by over 1 minute. I am happy with his performance. He has had some rough spots in his training, but on the day of the race he delivered. Slowest mile 6:06 with 5:53 average.

10K:

Joseph 37:29 PR
Bonnie 39:43 PR
William 40:33
Matthew 40:55 PR
Stephen 47:17
Maddy 1:04:08 PR

Joseph had not had the best training, but still managed a small PR. Bonnie had a breakthrough run splitting 19:59, 19:44, thus getting a 5 K PR twice in a row. In the process she taught William a lesson about being humble and not making excuses - he could not keep up with her. Matthew also almost taught William a lesson in humility. His opening 5 K of 20:11 was also a 5 K PR.

Maddy ran her first 10 K. Her 5 K split of 29:45 was her first sub-30:00 5K.
