Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Races:

4 miles:

Benjamin - 3rd overall, 20:08 - started out too fast going for the glory, then paid for it, but still pulled off a course PR + a turkey.

Joseph - 23:13, course PR, 1st in 15-18, turkey, good race, good pacing.

Jacob - 23:15, course PR, struggled towards the end, but toughed it out, 1st in 12-14, turkey.

Dad - 23:44, 1st in 45-49, turkey, thanks to David Taylor being too old. Did not feel good from the start for some reason, tried to run the target pace for 23:00 for the first 2 miles or so, then just could not do it, lost it mentally, but once Jackie Hendrickson caught me, I was able to regroup, toughen up, and run with her to the finish. Looking at the splits, I think we had a stronger canyon headwind going along the Center street this year.

Nate - 27:44 - first time racing 4 miles. He has progressed a lot since he started running.

Jenny - 28:32, good result for recovering from COVID. The actual infection did not seem to have hit her too bad, but then there was a long term fall out with difficulty breathing and chest pain on her runs.

Julia - 32:07, decent time considering her struggles this year, and managed to win the 15-18 age division, turkey.

Sarah - 35:20 - was hoping to run faster, was not happy when she finished, but then ended up winning the 40-44 age division and a turkey for the first time.

Leigha - 100 meters, 0:57. Had a foot injury prior to the race, wore a cast for three weeks, just recently had it taken off, so could not quite go as fast, but still managed to go under 60 seconds.

Bella: 400 meters - 2:16, 1st place in girls 3-4, turkey.

800 meters:

Mary 3:54, 2nd in girls 5-6, pie.

Matthew 2:58, 1st in boys 7-8, turkey. Would have been faster if he had not started out the first 200 on pace for 2:30.

1 mile:

Stephen 6:05, 1st in boys 9-10. Very good run except for the last 400. But at least he had very solid first 0.75, which is better than he has done for a while. We just need to work learning how not to settle as the finish approaches and fatigue sets on and on enduring 100% to the end.

William - 5:49. Maya Bybee, Dustin and Tawny's daughter was in the race, which gave William some serious motivation, but it lasted just long enough to put enough of a gap on her to feel safe. She ended up outkicking Stephen, though, and finishing in 6:02.
