Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).  

 

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

16 total. Ran with Chad. We did 5 miles down the canyon in 29:27 (5:53,5:56,5:54,5:56,5:48). It was hard, but I was not getting weaker as the run progressed. Felt that I could have used more sleep, though.

Benjamin did 3x1.25 down after a long warm-up. 6:06, 6:00, 5:50. He finally got going by the third one.

The kids ran the 800 at the meet at the American Fork High. Results:

Matthew had a very interesting race. He opened in 92, I yelled that he was gong too slow, then he broke away from the pack ran 43, 39 almost catching the leaders.

The temperature was around 80F, so I think the kids were a bit sluggish.

Jacob went 68(good), 75 (bad). Joseph 69 (good), 74(bad). I wonder if maybe the heat got to them. For Matthew it might also have been the reason he started out way too slow. William struggled as well opening in 78, and then completely blowing up in the second lap. Bonnie had a great race, ran a PR. Stephen was evenly paced, but he had a hard time as well.

Ran easy 12 in Umatilla, OR. Benjamin did 5 with me. Joseph and Jacob did 8 with 2 down the canyon at 6:00 pace, William ran 6 with 1 mile at 6:00. Easy 5 for Stephen and Matthew.

In the afternoon Benjamin and I drove to Portland where Benjamin ran 5000 in the Portland Twilight meet. His time was 14:47.62 - he reached his goal of breaking 15:00 in Crocs.

Very nice kick in the last 200 passing Jackson Lyle from Gonzaga right before the finish line and achieving the benchmark of Croc-lapping somebody who ran 16:02 (Ryan Jones). If Ryan had kicked a little harder, this would have given Benjamin the distinction of having Croc-lapped a sub-16:00.

This was his first sea-level race since 2019, and first sea-level track race since 2017. Just from watching the video, I can see opportunities for improvement. Up to 3000 he is running at the front of the 14:35-14:40 pack pushing the pace on occasion. Then he gets to 3000, sees 8:45 split, which to him means two things: a) He is in a lion's den, and b) 75s to the finish will give him his goal of sub-15:00. So he takes the foot off the gas, and loses contact with the pack. After a lap in 73 he realizes he is stronger than he thinks, and starts working to catch up to the pack that he just let go. But now he is alone and he has to speed up to something from 73 instead of continuing to coast at 71 with the front of the pack. He finds a 72 and catches the tail end of the pack around 3800, but now he lost two laps for nothing. With the same effort he could have gotten to 3800 in 11:08 instead of 11:12, and now with 3 laps to go he has the pack and the momentum.

Then of course, there is training your legs to not be afraid of sea-level appropriate turnover. Not sure how much more this will bring.

Of course, some will point out that a certain amount of improvement can be made by trading Crocs for carbon plate shoes. I know from my tests that Crocs are equal to regular racing flats - at least for me and Benjamin. So carbon plate shoes will give him maybe 20 seconds. Well, then he would be just another 14:27 5 K runner in carbon plate shoes. I'd take 14:47 in Crocs over that any day :-) This is not to say that at some point it would not make sense to start alternating. But not yet, I think.

I finished just behind William, probably around 51.0. In the last 100 I had some issue with stability and felt like I was going to fall over if I pushed any harder trying to pull even and get him to go faster. But I was able to relax a bit and then I could run behind him.

Did the Uneventful Provo River Half with Chad in 1:20:01. Did not feel as good as I did last time. Struggled in the last 4 miles. I think I sweated out some electrolytes as it was much warmer . Ordered salt pills, will try them in the 5 mile tempo next Saturday to see if I am able to absorb them on the go, and if it helps.

We did a 5 mile tempo down the canyon in 29:23. I was struggling today, but toughed it out. I did have to make a bathroom stop half way, so this was more of a 2.5 + 2.5 with less than ideal recovery.

Benjamin finally ran a good tempo - 29:42 down the canyon for 6 miles. Getting up earlier and running when it is cool helped.

The kids raced 3000 at the USATF meet at the Corner Canyon High in Draper. Results:

I was happy about everybody's performance. Jacob and Joseph took a first step to getting off their plateau. William improved his attitude, and took a step to climbing out of the hole. For Stephen and Matthew it was their first track 3000, and unlike in their first 3200 a month or so ago, they ran respectably. Bonnie held it together quite well for her level of training, and was not too far off her PR.

12 total. Matthew ran a mile time trial to redeem himself from yesterday's fiasco, and in spite of only a short gap between the races, he was able to run a PR of 6:03.4. His splits were 86, 91, 91, 93. We need to work on not starting to feel sorry for yourself after the first half - or sometimes even before reaching that mark.

William did a workout where he ran the first 800 with Matthew (he was about a second ahead), and then he was supposed to pick it up and kick. Except he started feeling sorry for himself because it was lap 3 and in his mind it is time to do that, and was just coasting or rather suffering at about 90 seconds per lap. So he ended up with 5:59 for the mile.

16.5 total. Did a 5 mile tempo down the canyon with Chad, Joseph, and Jacob. Joseph was running without a watch or splits being called out to him, and was given a task to run whatever pace he thought was honest for 5 miles. We ended up with 30:03, splits 6:08, 6:03, 5:58, 6:00, 6:02, 5:52. However, after 2 miles Joseph was having panic attacks of his style in bursts so the pace was very uneven - he kept micro-surging, then slowing down. I did the salt pill experiment, and it went well. The first one, which I took during the tempo, did not seem to do much as the weather was still cool and we were not too far into the run. I took the second one about 14 miles into the run, and then about a mile or so later did a pickup with Bonnie for 0.375 in 2:06, and it felt unusually good for the end of 16 miles.

Chad was struggling today as he just got his second shot of the COVID vaccine. It manifested itself in a sudden onset of fatigue in stress spots - the end of the 5 mile tempo, and the end of the entire run.

Benjamin has had his SI-join problem get out of hand resulting in imbalance and knee pain. So for his workout he only was able to manage 3 miles in 15:30 and decided not to do the second interval to avoid making things worse.
