Triathlons are my New sport and I LOVE IT

Recent last few years  as I havent done much since I was 16/17yrs, on and off injuries, going out with Friends started. Operations on injuries- compartment syndrome front of the shin had small operation to release the pressure on the fascia.

Oct 2007.  Did the great north run.  ( I was in the elite ladies race, against Kara Goucher and Paula Radcliffe, Im sure u Americans will recall that race).

I was just in on my previous times from the Bath Half Marathon. I ran it as best as I could off my training & circumstances...

Decided to do my 1st Marathon with London looming in the following April I was in the ladies Elite race again.  So the training was on.  I realise now I didnt give my body enough time to recover as it did break down in the last 5 weeks of my training. Injury bound, with calf and hamstring problems I raced!

London Marathon, April 08 (Injury calf issues) 1st marathon  3hrs.12mins .30 secs

Dublin Marathon  Oct 08  3hrs.01mins.13  undulating and 1 toilet stuck/stop (LOL)

Bath Half 2007    1.26.35 hrs

Wilmslow half marathon english champs    1.25.39

18th lady  (With piriformis injury ).

Liverpool 10k 2008 Oct 37.42mins midst marathon training

Wirral 5k 2009 17.41mins off the back off marathon week

Track 3000ms 10.45mins  hmmm I ran this to get points for my club so I just did tactical and ran on 1st lady shoulder and sprinted at the end !

As a youngster

County Champion for Xcountry and

High Jump

and 1500ms track.

pbs aged 13 yrs old

800ms 2mins 16secs

1500ms 4mins 48 secs

high jump 1metre 53  (cant do this now) and I never trained for it as a kid, just competed alot for points for my club, usually spend 2 hours highjumping, and skip off to do an 800 or 1500ms race then go back to high jump, Wish I took the running more seriously!

Run on more than several occasions for my County against Ireland county of Dublin.

Top 50 finnisher at 14yrs of age in english nationals Xcountry.

Well I got to sleep in again, till 8am, how nice.... My son is off school today they call it an Inset day, offical day off so Teachers can do training!

My mum looked after Dylan, whilst I shot off to the gym, at 8.30am, its gonna be a hot day again. 23 degrees at 8am, not my idea of nice weather for a hard session.

Xtrainer 15 mins, level 6 to loosen up.

2.5 miles warm up, as its warm again I stayed at 8.30pace and kept the distance down for the warm up warm down.

mile 1         5.52

Mile  2        6.01

mile  3        6.05   this one was hard, I wanted to stop at half way, but pushed on didnt care if I finished on 6.30 just wanted to finnish it.

mile 4         5.55   How psychology plays hey, last one and I found it real hard, but kept the pace going nowing I was finnishing on this one.   also a strong breeze against me, helped to keep me cool but still was strong.

2.5 miles warm down, real slow pace I was shattered at this point  8.30pace.  its warm today and I suffer in the heat.

xtrainer 5 mins level 3.  now to hydrate and in an hour im going to the swimming pool with Dylan and his friend, Im going to do an hours swim whilst they play.

Did 100 lengths, in a 25 metre pool, last 4 lengths, Did 1 and a bit under water then the last 3 hard.... then rest.  Took me 50.32 mins to do complete the 100 lengths.

Bike ride with Paul (husband), Dylan and his friend, although we got caught in a proper rain storm LOL soaked!  1hour.

Open to discussion ....

Ice baths, I have read so much on this over the internet now Im confused ahhhhhhh:

So what does everyone on here do, do they do ice baths? and for how long? also alot of people on the internet only do ice baths after their long run???   I do mine after a hard session, and a long run ???

Im just real curious to what others do so go ahead and comment :-)

I've only done ice baths a couple of times...not my favorite. I have taking dips in cold streams after runs though and enjoy that much more.

Jeff. Wish we had a nice stream to dip into, I could dip my legs in the cold sea, but then its a 3 mile jog back so that wouldnt be of benefit, I dont think.

I do run in the sea when Im injured or got real sore legs this helps lots, but its not the cleanest of sea's so!

Cooking speed! Nice workout. I do ice baths when I feel the legs need to be refreshed. I haven't done one for sometime now. 20 minutes is long enough. I used to do them after a marathon, but I haven't done one after my last 4 marathons. But that's a good time too. I see nothing wrong with doing them after a hard session. If it works that's all that matters.

Does your son go to school year around? Our kids are out for the summer.

From Barry on Fri, Jun 26, 2009 at 22:44:27 from 67.60.189.215

I also do a 20 minute ice bath. I feel that helps me out the most. I will look into this a little more for you.

Nice pool work!

I avoid baths all together. Except for blood baths.

From sam Dean-Howard on Sat, Jun 27, 2009 at 09:05:25 from 90.212.41.35

Kory, Thanks was fast in this heat, and I really had to find something for the last rep, I even shouted at myself on the last 100ms, LOL...

My son does have 6 weeks off school for the summer, I think thats in about 2 weeks time, :-( really wrecks my routine,, I like routine and dont like it messed about with so I find it hard, and so does Dylan (my son) as he gets taken around allot he cycles I run.

Barry thats great, I am keeping up the 20 min ice baths still, I dont find them too bad at the moment, I have just got a small kids pool too as maybe it would be better for the enviroment to try save on water.

Mike, Yeah I like swimming but not a great fan of it, it's pretty boreing really, so its just get it done with as it helps ease my legs lots, like a water massage in a way :-) I take it you avoid Ice Baths LOL your funny blood baths...... Happy days and thanks for all the comments really appreciated nice to know what other's do too

:-)

Hi Sam. I used to do ice baths but didn't really enjoy it. It can help your legs feel better because it reduces inflammation, but the inflammation is one thing that helps the muscles in our legs heal, which can help us perform better in the long run. So I'm not sure what is best. Maybe the running boo I'm reading will have some answers.

From sam Dean-Howard on Sun, Jun 28, 2009 at 05:52:31 from 90.212.41.35

Thanks Steve, my legs feel better after ice baths and I did have a piriformis injury on my last h/marathon, I think I had about 8 ice baths and heat applied between each one with massage et. Too the days before and it worked till mile 10 then I had to cut the pace if I can rember right! I'm sure they work but wanting to look into it more myself thankyou :-)

From Jon on Sun, Jun 28, 2009 at 09:39:30 from 75.169.152.213

I usually do them in a cold stream/river and only when it is worth the added time, which means after hard long runs and races. But if you have time, doing it more can only help, I imagine.

From Adam RW on Sun, Jun 28, 2009 at 11:49:44 from 98.202.223.65

Nice workout. I agree with Jon. It is a time issue. If I could, I would do many more of them. In college there were a couple of us that would do them after every workout, speed or long. I haven't done one this year but last year I would do them after track workouts or runs over 15mi. The cool stream option is nice when available but I find cold water out of the tap is often good enough ~55F for 15min.

From sam Dean-Howard on Sun, Jun 28, 2009 at 17:03:48 from 90.212.41.35

Jon, I know what you mean with the added time, it is hard to fit in, as well as all the other stuff, warm down stretch etc...

Again Adam I would try do them more often not always time either it is pretty hard going sometimes I must add! But generally I do try to do the ice bath after a hard training session, but Im trying to make sure Im injury free this time round..... So wish I had a cool stream near me :-)
