Triathlons are my New sport and I LOVE IT

Recent last few years  as I havent done much since I was 16/17yrs, on and off injuries, going out with Friends started. Operations on injuries- compartment syndrome front of the shin had small operation to release the pressure on the fascia.

Oct 2007.  Did the great north run.  ( I was in the elite ladies race, against Kara Goucher and Paula Radcliffe, Im sure u Americans will recall that race).

I was just in on my previous times from the Bath Half Marathon. I ran it as best as I could off my training & circumstances...

Decided to do my 1st Marathon with London looming in the following April I was in the ladies Elite race again.  So the training was on.  I realise now I didnt give my body enough time to recover as it did break down in the last 5 weeks of my training. Injury bound, with calf and hamstring problems I raced!

London Marathon, April 08 (Injury calf issues) 1st marathon  3hrs.12mins .30 secs

Dublin Marathon  Oct 08  3hrs.01mins.13  undulating and 1 toilet stuck/stop (LOL)

Bath Half 2007    1.26.35 hrs

Wilmslow half marathon english champs    1.25.39

18th lady  (With piriformis injury ).

Liverpool 10k 2008 Oct 37.42mins midst marathon training

Wirral 5k 2009 17.41mins off the back off marathon week

Track 3000ms 10.45mins  hmmm I ran this to get points for my club so I just did tactical and ran on 1st lady shoulder and sprinted at the end !

As a youngster

County Champion for Xcountry and

High Jump

and 1500ms track.

pbs aged 13 yrs old

800ms 2mins 16secs

1500ms 4mins 48 secs

high jump 1metre 53  (cant do this now) and I never trained for it as a kid, just competed alot for points for my club, usually spend 2 hours highjumping, and skip off to do an 800 or 1500ms race then go back to high jump, Wish I took the running more seriously!

Run on more than several occasions for my County against Ireland county of Dublin.

Top 50 finnisher at 14yrs of age in english nationals Xcountry.

6am start again yawn!

1hr 30 mins xtrainer, did mostly level 6 and 7, this did get boreing this morning, I seem to have less attention span in the mornings, as I can do 2 hours quite easily in the afternoon.

My hamstring is slightly better again, I have more range of movement, but its still sore, I thought it would be so much better by now, and I would be running.

We are going away next weekend for 6 days to the lake district Coniston, I was really wanting to get some hilly training done this week, fell running etc..... I am not sure this is going to happen, but still I can hope for it.

I am really confused as whether I should go to Berlin now, its less than 6 weeks I have missed 3 long runs, and 2 weeks of running training?   we have paid for the flights but not the hotel yet!   I have looked up some other marathons smaller ones, the ferrari one looks good in Italy, its a much smaller race, but flat and fast, and hey we will be able to go see the ferrari track etc....... so anyones thoughts????

so Swimming, thought pink would be nice for today!

I did 100 laps, with 10 laps in the middle, 2 fast 2 easy, this was hard, I didnt puch the other laps I was feeling tired, and my son was doing lengths with me, so it took me about 50 mins, then one length underwater and 2 hard and finnish!

That's a tricky one, as to whether you still go to Berlin. I think (in my very limited experience! LOL) the marathon is a race where you really want to be 100% both so you can physically put in a good performance but also so your confidence is high. If you could find a marathon a month or two after then you could still make up the training you have missed.

Doing a different marathon might seem the 'safer' option as provided you sort the injury issues you can be pretty sure you will be in good shape and put in a decent performance (even if you might have been ok for Berlin).

Whereas if you do Berlin then it could go fine and you have a great race. If it doesn't though, it's not like you can do another marathon the week after, plus it wouldn't do your confidence much good.

The only other option I can think of (since you payed the flights) is to go to Berlin provided you are running ok, and decide after a set point eg 15 miles whether you are good to continue, otherwise pull out. That way you could still do another marathon later on. Of course you would have the extra expense to travel if it's outside UK.

There is a marathon in Luton in December and I think it is flat (you should check) but it is a lapped course.

Chris, Some valid points I have already considered, as my 1st Marathon London I went into it injured, I hadnt run the last 3 weeks, and it was seriously the hardest thing I have ever ever done! proper soul finder I tell You.

Okay point 1 yeah, safer option,

point 2 the expense yep agree, but to go to Berlin and maybe pull out, would be well Im not all that great on DNF havent done one before ?? I may struggle with this....

point 3. another marathon I found a great smallish marathon Ferrari marathon in Italy November looks good flat fast, but its italy flights again ???

Suppose I have to ring easyjet and see if a possibilty of a change fee of flights I so doubt it though!

Luton looks ok but the website doesnt say if its flat although it does say not suitable for wheelchair users so maybe no so flat ??

I think you might be right about Luton (for some reason I thought it was flat but doesn't look like it :(), problem is it is 4 laps of a hilly course, maybe the one in Italy sounds best?

There is a also a new marathon in Newcastle but I don't know if it is hilly or they have entries left

Are you trying to PR, or just finish? Just finish- Berlin should be fine. PR- depends on how you feel.

Yeah Chris looks like I'm gonna give Berlin a go

Jon I'm trying to pr break 3 hrs hey if I don't I'm doing London nxt year! I'm thinking do what Chris said see how it goes by 15 miles and then decide even treat as training ?

From allie on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 15:51:59 from 129.123.246.38

yes, go for it at berlin. i think you will be fine, especially with all the time on the xtrainer while you are out. you are very fit; i don't think you will lose much, if any, as you work your way back up to 100%. good luck.

allie, Thanks your great, and so strong with your running..... I just hope I can do what you did and break 3 hours.

I am going to be able to jog tomorrow Yay! and its another swim session today after my xtrainer this morning. I am going to do Berlin me thinks :-)
