Ran a nice easy/asleep summit light run to loosen up this morning. Knee felt really good for the first 2 miles, but the last one it was getting sorer - but not horrid at all!! Felt nice to run in the cool morning by myself and just relax. (Alchemy 144.4)

The race was pretty unorganized, first we thought the girls went first, so we warmed up, then they told us boys were first, so we just stretched slow, then they told us we were starting 5 minutes after the boys since it was a one-loop course, so we hurried over to the start w/o finishing stretches. Then some school's boys totally missed their race, so the officials were going to start those boys a minute before all us girls, then when they shot the gun for them, they told us girls to go with them when we weren't expecting it at all and they hadn't told us we were going with the boys - they'd said the exact opposite! So the start was really crappy and late. Weird.

Then the course was pretty crazy! It went out in the dirt desert on some 4-wheeler trails or something, with some intensely steep hills (up and down - ow) and the whole race there was tons of wind (mmm...sand...yummo). The race itself actually went reasonably well, I still think I could've pushed better in a couple of places when I let myself settle and my hamstring almost died on all those hills, but overall not bad. And I won!!! Got one of my two goals for the race, since my time was 19:09. Dern. (DD spike 15.9)

But so close! Without the crazy start, you probably could have gotten both goals! Good job!

Nice job.

I noticed in your side bar that you are looking at some private DIII schools (except Brown, which is DI). Willamette and Haverford in particular are Top 20 XC programs. Nick Symmonds (America's top 800m runner) went to Willamette, so they must know something about developing runner. I went DIII myself, and enjoyed it quite a bit. It is very competitive, but your academics come first. If you're not opposed to the Midwest, check out Calvin College. It's the best DIII XC program in the nation, and excellent academics. Plus you would get to train under Brian Diemer, 3-time Olympian and coolest guy on earth.

Paul - I've been looking mostly at going to a DIII school and getting an academic scholarship there. I looked at the site for Calvin and it looks really good - especially they seem to have good academic programs in the areas I'm looking at, so that makes it more of an option. I filled out their internet recruitment form for XC, so we'll soon see if they're interested in me at all. The only problem I see with going there is that I'd have to race in those awkward underwear-looking uniform bottoms! Really, thanks for the info, it's definitely been useful.

Ruth - Calvin's scholarships are pretty good. I escaped with a relatively small amount of student loan debt. Of course tuition was less than $15,000/year back then. I can't imagine what it is now.

I can guarantee they will be interested in you. You are the caliber of runner they recruit. And they have a knack for developing talent and turning "ordinary" runners into All Americans (speaking from personal experience). I improved by leaps and bounds every year I was there. The only downshot is the harsh Michigan winters.

You get used to the bloomers. If you could get more sleep and keep improving you could walk on almost anywhere. I walked on to BYU and had a wonderful experience. For me, having really fast teammates and a world class coach helped me improve. I was never an All-American, but I blossomed. I look forward to seeing how things go for you! It would be useful if you put the year by your PR's so we can track your progress.
