WAC CHAMPS! Both boys and girls teams won it! I got 2nd team All-WAC and it was a crazy race. Right at the starting line, my team captain told me that the first freshman finisher would get "Freshman of the Year," so I set my sights on that as we got going in the race. Sadly, I ended up being the 2nd freshman by 9 seconds, but I'm still pretty happy with how I did!

Now, for the play-by-play! First mile went by quickly with tons of downhill and a split of 5:45. At that point, almost all of my team was right in the front pack together and it felt great. I let up a bit on the second mile and fell behind the lead pack, but still held reasonably strong, remembering to push on the turns and little downhills (which were far too few), so I didn't loose too much ground on the leaders. 2-mile time was 12:00 (I think it mighta been a tad long). As the last mile came around, I started pushing more and slowly started gaining of the people ahead of me. On the last half mile, I really picked it up and caught quite a few girls. The big hill right before the finish killed me, but it killed the people near me even more...hehehe. Into the finishing stretch, I passed two or three more and ended up coming in right behind my teammates (we finished 3, 9,10,11,15). The course was pretty hard and possibly long, since all the times were slow (the winner didn't even break 18:00). We thought the points were really close, but we won by 18 points. It was super fun to win the meet as a team, my voice is half-gone from all the screaming and yelling we did in celebration!

Today, my legs aren't even sore, so I'm pretty sure I could've run faster. Shucks. I'll do better at Regionals in two weeks, though! (GT 498) (DD spike 101)

From Andy on Sun, Nov 02, 2008 at 03:27:53

Congratulations. That is quite an accomplishment as a freshman.

From The Howling Commando on Sun, Nov 02, 2008 at 08:12:03

I agree with Andy! I can't fathom having such a gift like you do! Sweet race! You a fast chicka for sure! And I just now saw in your picture from race earlier this season that you're wearing socks with SKULLS AND CROSSBONES?! That's hardcore! No wonder that girl looks so perturbed behind you she got passed by DEATH!

From dave holt on Sun, Nov 02, 2008 at 11:41:12

Awesome Ruthie! I am so stoked for you. And I am sure it feels great for you to actually be on a team championship!

From cody on Sun, Nov 02, 2008 at 14:18:22

Nice race Ruth! Enjoy the post-race celebrations!

From Ruthie on Sun, Nov 02, 2008 at 17:12:01

Thanks all you guys! I haven't stopped grinning about it yet!

Benn- sad to say, but I'm not that hardcore... :( I borrowed those socks, it was just for the home meet! But the girl behind me looks like death... maybe she can have the title!

Holt- truly! It's amazing. And I'm excited for more!

Awesome job! I was excited when I picked up the paper this morning and saw an Aggie sweep (the headline was above the football team for once). Running a race like that and still being the second freshman on a championship team must make you very excited for the next four years. Good team depth.

From Ruthie on Sun, Nov 02, 2008 at 18:01:37

Thanks Paul! I was the first freshman on my team, though, just not in the race.... But we're still gonna own in the next four years, fo sho.:D

From David Hilton on Sun, Nov 02, 2008 at 23:04:12

Sweet! See you next week? Or in three?

From Jon on Mon, Nov 03, 2008 at 09:54:29

Yes, congrats Ruth! 11th place overall is awesome! Keep up the amazing work.

From Mik'L on Thu, Nov 06, 2008 at 22:01:03

Nice job Ruthie! The first thing I thought was you deserve a team championship like none other! Nice individual stats too! I'm so proud of you! Keep it up at Regionals. I miss you!
