It was short 1.35-mile morning run over to Big Cottonwood Park where I completed a single lap around the softball complex before heading back. For this run, I brought my metronome along for entertainment purposes. I was able to get in synch with an 83-strides-per-minute pace. For me, this is a pretty fast turnover; that is, I still have to concentrate to get 83, so my natural turnover must be around 82 (maybe this year I can get up to 84).

After work I decided that I needed a recovery day, so I jogged 2.75 miles to and from the library before calling it day.

My daily non-running routine consisted of 300 sit-ups, 30 push-ups, and a 100-second wall sit.

nice job on running with the metronome. i am in the 80-82 range as well (160-164 steps). the recommended 180 is very, very hard for me to achieve. it feels awkward and fast and makes me feel like i am shuffling. working on it...

Oh yeah, 180 is crazy fast with a normal stride! I always try setting my metronome to the elite runners cadence when watching the Boston and NYC marathons and most of them seem to be in the upper 80s (170s). Okay, it was not a question of if, but when someone was going to add the side plank to the mix. Way to take the lead on this! It should be good for the obliques. Also, way to incorporate the wall sits (Kathrine Switzer would be so proud) and 2:02 is impressive to say the least (I always call uncle after 1:40). Not to jinx you, but if you keep this up you will have an excellent shot at smashing your PR at the D-News!

i was actually thinking of katherine switzer's book last night as i was doing my wall sit. i remember reading that part about her not wanting to give in before her...doctor? funny stuff. i think i need to read that book again.

the side plank hurts my shoulders, but yes -- definitely good for the obliques.

Agree and I also need to read Katherine's book again... so many classic parts in it (Arnie becoming delusional during their 26.2-plus-mile training run... Oh, I like how she would do exercises in her office; that is, I do the same in my cubicle). After I get through my studies, I'm absolutely re-reading this one.

Also, the side planks are even more brutal and good luck at surviving this smog.
