That is what I was supposed to be doing this morning.  Instead, I slept in.  When I finally got up, I iced my leg/ankle.  Today will be a total rest day.  Pain level is still high walking and my foot doesn't move quite right when I walk.  My shin bone isn't really hurting when I push on it anymore which makes me think I may have had some mild shin splints, but there is something else going on.  After a brief brush up on my anatomy, I realize the pain radiates along my posterior tibia tendon from about the spot where the shin pain was, down past my ankle bone to the side of my foot.  Hopefully I've just sprained that tendon and a few more days in the boot will have me good as new, but the feeling of pain, discomfort, and lack of control of the foot is very similar to what I experienced when I ruptured my PF tendon.  I may have to bite the bullet and go see the doc.  I'll wait until next week and see how it's doing though.  I'm sure I'll fork out a thousand dollars for them to tell me to stay off of it.

You made the right decision today. I really hope that a couple more days of rest will be all that you need.

Boy I missed a ton while I was gone. I hope all is better soon.

You totally made the right decision to take a rest day.

Rhett -- I am so sorry you are dealing with this right now -- especially when you are right at your peak. :(

So the pain runs down your lower leg to the medial side of the foot? Does the medial side of the bottom of your foot hurt as well (the arch area), especially when you turn your foot inwards?

Is it feeling at all better?

I am so glad you didn't run.

From Teena Marie on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 16:22:24 from 174.52.45.85

btw, is this the same leg/foot that you had your PF issues with?

From Rhett on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 17:54:37 from 74.36.37.19

Teena, yes the pain starts about 3 inches above my ankle on the posterior side of my tibia. That is where it hurts the most. Then it runs down behind the ankle bone and then right below it to the medial side of my foot. I've had a few quick pains in the arch, but nothing substanial. Yes, that is the foot I had the PF rupture. Good news, my arch still appears high like normal and I don't think my foot is pronating when I stand.

No way I could have run today. I can barely walk. No, not really feeling better at all today. Maybe by Monday. I already told Doone I wouldn't be able to run with her tomorrow. Hopefully next Saturday though.

Is it possible that the posterior tibial muscle pulled away from the tibia at the point where I am having most of my pain and that is affecting the whole tendon? A couple weeks ago my foot was pretty tender right there below my ankel bone on the medial side of my foot and I layed sideways and rolled it with a golf ball for a few days and that seemed to go away. I wonder if that was the beginning of this problem.

Sorry for the long post. I'm frustrated with this today and am just venting.

From Teena Marie on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 19:24:33 from 174.52.45.85

Rhett -- I am sure you are more than frustrated. I don't want to be the kind of person that says, "I know how you feel" but dang, I do. My training before Boston was the best it had ever been. I was running my 20+ miles sub 8s (which for me was huge). Then out of no where ... bam! I was so angry, frustrated, disappointed, sad, etc. I would try and be happy and keep the proper perspective, but man it consumed my thoughts. Just hang in there! Who knows ... in a few days you might be feeling much much much better.

Yes, the muscle can always tear away. In the case of the post tib it could either tear away from the interosseus membrane on the tibia or it's insertion point on those little tiny bones above your metatarsals. I am just really hoping you have not ruptured that tendon at this point.

Hey, didn't Pron8r have problems with his post tib? Have you talked to him yet?

From Teena Marie on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 19:25:34 from 174.52.45.85

You are icing and wearing that boot still, right?

What about compression? Can you tape it up?

From Rhett on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 20:29:32 from 184.10.154.170

Thanks Teena, I just put a post on the Forum to see if anyone knows anything about my injury. I appreciate all of your input.

I've been using a compression sleeve. It seems to provide more relief than taping it. I'm trying to stay positive. I still have 3 weeks to get it better and I know I can maintain my fitness with cross training. I just have to figure out what cross training I can do without causing further damage. It might just be water running and cycling.

From DonGardinero on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 21:19:17 from 152.216.7.5

Dang, Rhett..I'm really sorry this is happening to you. I hope it's nothing serious. I don't know anything about the human anatomy, so I can't help you at all.

From Teena Marie on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 22:36:29 from 174.52.45.85

Just be careful. If it is your post tib then the water running might not be a good idea -- too much plantar flexion. Biking might be your best bet.

From Teena Marie on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 22:38:54 from 174.52.45.85

And btw, after Boston I could not even walk for several days. My leg was twice its normal size and there was pain 24 hours a day. Yet, 3.5 weeks later I ran Ogden as a training run and ended up beating my Boston time by 5 minutes. Just be smart. I know you will!!! :)

From Teena Marie on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 22:46:20 from 174.52.45.85

Oh yeah ... I'm glad the compression sleeves are helping. You might want to consider taping your ankle though. i.e., stabilizing it to avoid inversion and plantar flexion until things settle down. Just an idea.

Rhett, How are you feeling?

From Teena Marie on Sun, May 23, 2010 at 19:48:31 from 174.52.45.85

Happy Birthday.

You made sure to blow all your candles out with one breath, right?

From Rhett on Sun, May 23, 2010 at 21:21:02 from 184.10.154.170

Teena, I had a great birthday. Thanks for asking. I've not done anything exercise wise all weekend. I decided to just take a complete break from it all for a couple days and try to not think about my leg. Unfortunately with every step I take it reminds about the injury. It does seem a little better today though. I just read Pron8rs response to my inquiry. Sounds like a may be out for a while. I'm still hoping I'm a quick healer though and will be back running by the end of next week.

I hope you had a great weekend. Thanks for the concern. I think you may be right about deep water running. I did it for a couple minutes while I was playing with the kids in the pool and it did hurt.

From Andy on Sun, May 23, 2010 at 22:30:31 from 198.60.114.178

Happy belated birthday. I'm so sorry you are going through another injury. You and Teena have dealt with more than your share of injuries. I know you will make it through this one and come out stronger than ever.

From Smooth on Sun, May 23, 2010 at 23:34:05 from 174.23.172.155

HAPPY belated birthday!!! Rhett!

Keep up the positive attitude! Yes, you're a young and quick healer!!!! HEAL!

From Burt on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 13:17:22 from 206.19.214.144

Dang it! I wasn't the first to wish you happy birthday. I'm a terrile friend.

From Teena Marie on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 13:47:31 from 174.52.45.85

Hey Rhett, I was thinking, if you are going to have to go on that nasty prednisone you best be getting into a doc asap so that it can be out of your system before UVM -- (just in case).

From Kelli on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 15:45:43 from 71.219.93.114

Happy belated Birthday!

Okay, i slack off on blogging and you get hurt. DANG, I hope it is feeling better. It might be worth it to go visit a doctor on this one.

From DonGardinero on Mon, May 24, 2010 at 20:32:18 from 152.216.7.5

Happy Birthday, dude!!!
