Wellsville does a good job putting on races, and the course is accurate, so I decided to ues this to break 18 minutes in the 5K. The course follows the Wellsville Biathlon run course, adding an additional 0.6 miles. Rolling hills, nothing major, very nice course. Keith Anderson ran the 10K so I didn't get to race him today. So I picked Jason Miller at the start as the guy to race. Jason beat me by 2 minutes last week at the TOU half so I was looking to get even today. Jason took off fast and I hung back a bit. I ran the first mile at about a 5:45 pace, passing a bunch of over enthusiastic fast starters, then caught Jason at about mile 1. We looked at each other, then paced off each other the rest of the race. We were racing for 3rd place, two fast younger guys were way out in front of us. I knew it was going to come down to a sprint at the finish and it did. Unfortunately for me, I didn't have the fire to finish it, and he beat me across the finish by a second or two. So I missed the "money" by 2 seconds. The story of my life. Well, Jason is 10 years younger, and won the Wellsville Biathlon this year,  so that is some consolation to me. Good news is I met my goal of breaking 18 minutes, which I haven't done in a long time, so was happy with that. After the race I re-ran the course with Carol Rowe to cool down. Then went home and changed the oil on my daughter's car.

Way to go Rooster! That's some good speed.

You are in good company to give Jason a battle. Well done!

Yes, congrats on your sub-18 goal.

hey thanks for the nice comments, support and encouragement! this blog is really great, it's amazing how the info and support I have gotten here has resulted in faster race times and more confidence. great to have a community of fellow runners to hang out with and learn from!!

Oh, and Cody, my guess is Jason could have dropped me anytime he wanted too. He was just running a fast tempo to get ready for TOU, and it was nice we both were running the same pace. He is fun to run with. we even had the same shirts on, the same ones you and Paul had when I saw you last week, so we sort of looked like twins too.

Nice job Scott! You seem to just keep getting faster. Congrats on breaking 18.

Congratulations, Scott! I wish I could do that!

Nice job on breaking 18!!! Super impressive, it is always hard for me to believe times like that miss the money!

Great job Red, nice to see you under 18.

From redrooster on Tue, Sep 08, 2009 at 18:36:28 from 129.123.3.31

Thanks!! sub 18 was a great hurdle to clear and gives me some confidence for a (hopefully) 37 minute 10K.

Kelli, I don't think I will quit my day job yet, no matter what I do some young fast guys always seem to spoil my attempts at fame and glory and money...guys like Paul... but he's a pretty good coach. I only ran this fast because he told me I could. I'm now waiting for his instructions for my next race....

From Kelli on Tue, Sep 08, 2009 at 19:17:21 from 71.219.97.42

I wonder what he will say? If Paul says it, it is. I like that mentality.

From redrooster on Tue, Sep 08, 2009 at 19:39:51 from 71.219.136.195

yeah, I pretty much do what Paul tells me to. He told me I could run TOU half in 1:21 so I did. The next thing I get to do is help him move on Thursday, a small price to pay for expert coaching.

From Kelli on Tue, Sep 08, 2009 at 22:37:00 from 71.219.97.42

I wonder how much I would have to PAY Paul to tell me I still can run St George in 3:16???
