I'm kind of breaking away from the normal use of this blog and decided to set up a recipe blog so anyone can see what exactly this crazy family eats every day. We are very consistent and dedicated to good health. We have a unique way of eating that has brought us health and happiness.

Breakfast: Oats w/ soymilk or milk (the girls and I do milk, the boys are lactose intolerant and drink soymilk) topped with homemade granola.

Lunch:

Whole wheat angel hair pasta (I buy Heartland brand from Wal-mart...much cheaper than the health food store brand and satisfactory quality) Homemade spaghetti sauce with sauteed mushrooms. The kids and I top this with Parmesean cheese

sides: homemade bread with butter/honey/jam/garlic (sasha likes his with honey and garlic...yuck) organic baby carrots

Dinner: Homemade Pizza (it must be Italian day) Sasha likes his without cheese. I put plenty of cheese on top for me and the kids. Sometimes I buy chicken sausage from Costco for a yummy pizza topping.

sides: cucumber, carrots and watermelon

 

 

Even though we eat the same breakfast day after day I guess I just want people to see that that's really what we do. I vary our breakfast sometimes but if I make granola we definitely enjoy eating that. That is one way to keep things cheaper. Keeping your recipes simpler gives me more time to have a little bit of a life outside the kitchen and things are a bit cheaper that way. I do, however, try to provide variety for the health benefits I think it brings.

Sarah, when you say "oats" - what kind of oats are they? Plain rolled oats cooked, plain rolled oats uncooked, pre-processed oats (quick cooking)? If you cook them, is it just with water/salt and then you add milk when you serve them, or do you cook with milk/soymilk?

When I cook them I boil water add a little salt, agave and cinnamon. Then we eat our oatmeal with milk or soymilk and fresh or frozen berries (if we have them...I don't go back to the store before it is time) I try to limit my trips to the store in order to control our budget.

What type of sauce do you use for make? What type of flour also do you use for your homemade pizza?

I think I have a spaghetti sauce recipe on the Healthy Recipes link at the top and that's what I use in all my italian dishes.

Basically I use salt free tomato sauce from Walmart...cheapest I've founnd. Then I add whatever spice I feel like that day..I have an Italian blend of spices I use sometimes, onion, garlic, parsley....etc.

The dough of the pizza is a bread recipe that I make in my bosch. I use only whole wheat flour in all my baking.

We have a wheat grinder so I grind my flour fresh. For cookies, cakes, pizza, cinnamon rolls, etc I grind up Hard White Wheat because it has a lighter color and flavor.

For bread I've started using Hard red wheat because it has a heartier flavor and texture.

If you were going to buy whole wheat to make pizza crust with I would buy pastry whole wheat because it has a finer texture (doesn't mean only for pies though) As far as the actual bread recipe my crust comes out deep dish style and I've haven't experimented to make it a thinner crust. I've got the pizza crust recipe on their too and that one can be made by hand...the crust just comes out a little bit crumbly when mixed by hand.

I'm so glad it's helpful.It's actually a stress relief for me to type and have a minute to breathe and think about what I'm doing. It also encourages me to make something nice. When I menu plan I plan in a few easy nights. Don't try and do everything at once. Good luck!:)
