No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

I watched the races this morning and then went for a bike ride.10 miles in 35:09. I had to stop after 10 because I was too embarrassed by all the funny noises my bike was making. Lots of loose/squeeky parts. Time for some maintenance...

Here's something to entertain you while I go wrench on my bike:

17 miles in 58:00 on the bike. That may not sound like much, but on a 49lb bike with 26 x 2.1" knobbies it was a pretty good workout. The bike sounds much better now after getting some new brakes and a few other adjustments. I used to keep it in top shape when my commute was 16 miles each way to work. Since I moved closer to work about 5 years ago, I may have lubed the chain once or twice and that's it. Shame on me.
Pedaling hasn't bothered my foot at all so I may venture out a little farther next time. So far I've just been riding the 5 mile loop around the neighborhood. I'd like to do some riding with Preston since he recently got the triathlon bug.
I'm still wearing the boot when I 'm not on the bike, but I'm thinking about ditching it and just wearing my bike shoes instead after another week or so. I have some Keen commuter sandals with recessed cleats that are pretty comfortable even though the sole is stiff as a board. That would keep my foot stable and I wouldn't have to drag that boot around like a zombie with a dead leg.

Kym took her first ride with clipless pedals on "White Lightning" today. 7 miles of stop and go riding with no crash landings. Then we celebrated National Fried Chicken Day at Ezell's and went shopping for some new pedals since she got the ones from my bike. I also ordered some fast new tires for my bike. I got a set of these Conti Travel Contacts to replace the giant knobbies that came stock on my commuter bike over 7 years ago and rode about 7000 miles on them. They probably would have lasted even longer, but I was worried about the sidewalls when I removed them last winter to put the knobbies back on for the week of snow we had. They looked pretty shabby so I tossed them and have been riding on the knobbies since then. The "snow" tires are already showing wear after only a couple hundred miles on pavement so I bit the bullet and dropped $90 on a new set of CTC's with reflective sidewalls. Yeah, I know this has nothing to do with running, but I'm riding so I can run faster later.

Kym's bike "White Lightning" Check out that ginormous Walmart seat. It weighs almost as much as the rest of the bike with 2" of gel, and springs :)
