Today's run was great. There was about 5" of fresh snow on the ground so it was a little like running on the beach, only cooler.

No fresh snow today, just compact snow and ice. Slippery, but I finished my run with an 8:16 pace.

6" more snow last night and a nice layer of ice on top from the freezing rain that followed. Never thought I would describe a run as crunchy. Great scenery along Sunnyside Beach, everything was white all the way to the edge of the water. Chambers Bay Dr. hill was literally two steps forward and one step back. The people shoveling their driveways looked at me like I was crazy as I ran by.

It is great to be the crazy runner, huh??

Welcome to the blog!!

From rattletrap on Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 19:56:52

It sure is great to be the crazy runner! I feel excellent after three days in a row of the hardest running I've done in a while. I hope all of this work equates to a faster mile pace once I hit some dry pavement. I want to break 20 minutes in a 5k on New Years morning.

From Kelli on Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 20:33:30

Well, then! Good luck to you and I will wait for that race report on New Year's Day!!

From Mike on Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 20:39:19

Now the pressure is really on. I guess that's the point of this site huh? Or at least part of it :)

From Kelli on Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 20:43:07

Well, I am not sure if it is the point exactly, but it is the reality! You will get your own fan club cheering you on in cyberspace!!

Welcome to the blog. Good pace in the snow and ice.

Thanks for the comments. I am encouraged and anxious to get back out there so I have something to post :)

From Steve on Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 14:29:47

Mike, you are nuts running in that stuff! I almost slipped and fell just walking into the office. No way am I going to chance it out on the trails.

From rattletrap on Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 20:19:51

Steve,

It's really not as bad as it sounds. If you stay in the powder its not slippery at all on the flats. Hills are a bit of a challenge, but I like that.

No miles today. I had to work and there's no daylight between my start and finish time. I don't mind running in the snow or in the dark, but both at the same time couldn't amount to much except injury :)

I'll be resting tomorrow too, then I have 5 days off of work to catch up.

We had some rain today so about 80% of my run was on sandy pavement with good traction, the rest was a little slushy an not much fun. Tomorrow should be better, I might run the The Giant Killer.

Merry Christmas!
I got my run in today, but it was very icy and I was a bit tired after my extra mileage yesterday. My pace was a little slow but I feel great! No soreness anywhere, just a good tired :)

Still a lot of compact snow and ice on Chambers Bay Ct.
Mile 4 was over 9 minutes even with the downgrade for the second half.

I'm moving pretty slow again today. I didn't sleep well last night and I didn't feel like running at all this morning, but I did it anyway. There's still a lot of ice on mile 4 at Chambers Bay Ct.

I had to talk myself into running again this morning.  My back is still hurting from something I did while hauling out all the Christmas trash.  The pain gets better after a mile or so but it's tough to get started. Mile 4 was much faster now that the ice has melted, but my overall pace wasn't much better than yesterday.  I'm thinking about running again tomorrow morning (day 6) and then taking Tuesday and Wednesday off before the New Year's Day 5k.

Exciting run today! I woke up again without the alarm and I set out to run very slow and take it easy since I have a race on Thursday. The first mile was really cold so I had to speed up a little bit to keep warm. On mile two I got so close to a deer that I could have touched it. I wish I could sneak up on them like that during hunting season. It was a little colder down by the water and there were some patches of black ice to keep me on my toes in miles three through five. On mile six I saw a roll-over accident on the s curves coming up Steilacoom Blvd. Thankfully nobody was hurt and I helped the three soldiers put their PTCruiser back on it's feet just before the police arrived.
I'm sleeping in for real tomorrow :)

Wow, that was quite the eventful run!!! I can never get anywhere close to a deer running, you must have quiet feet. Maybe you can run through the woods while you hunt?

From rattletrap on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:49:08

That's one of the nice things about living in Steilacoom, I see deer at least a few times a week. Doe(s) wander around the neighborhood like they own the place and they're pretty tame. It is unusual to get that close to one though.

I think I'd feel guilty if hunting was that easy in their habitat, where it's legal :)

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 15:52:07

We see deer maybe once a week, but they are very skittish!

Easy hunting---isn't that a good thing? Then you could just run up there, hunt, run back home, an call it an afternoon (instead of an entire weekend!!!)

From rattletrap on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 16:25:52

That would make it cheaper too. My wife contends that it costs more for me to hunt than it does to just buy meat. Speaking of meat, or rather lack of it; I'm thinking about a vegetarian diet while I'm training for my next marathon in June. Any thoughts on that?

I'm serious about a BQ and I'm wondering if it could really help my performance...

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 22:53:19

Well, I hope someone reads that who knows!!! I am not a big meat eater, but I do like the occassional juicey, greasy hamburger. I eat mostly chicken. I actually eat vegetarian a few nights a weeks, just becasue my kids and I do not love meat so much!!! I survived, but you have to be careful and get your protein somehow. I know there is someone on this BLOG who is vegetarian. When it come to me, I will let you know who it is!

I am so glad my husband is not a hunter!! Your poor wife...but, heck, if you enjoy it, go for it! We just have friends who give my husband the elk steaks he loves!!!
