5:00am

I decided to simulate a long run today. I set the resistance down from 10 to 8 on the REX machine and put in 2.5 hours. 13.6 miles in the first 99 minutes and 7 miles on the next 51 minutes. As I was cleaning up the machine one of the staff came up to me and said she had never seen anyone on that machine so long before. I explained that I'm training for a marathon and we had a nice chat. I even got in a plug for FRB. I'm starting to wonder if this machine is doing enough for me now, it seems to be working my legs a lot harder than my heart. I'm working up a good sweat but recovery is very quick. I wonder if less resistance and more speed would be a better combination. Maybe I'll wear my HRM next time too. Now I kind of wish I had been wearing it before so I would have a baseline to compare. Oh well, at least I'm not just sitting around while my hamstring is healing. I'm resting tomorrow and running for real with my PT on Friday. He will see to it that I take it easy for a few miles. I hope it doesn't hurt afterwards like it did last week...

nice job on staying dedicated and getting through some very ambitious cross-training. good luck with the run on friday.

Did she have a Chinese accent and say, "You go now! You use REX machine too much! This not all you can eat!"

I saw the pictures of the REX in your other post--but I wonder does it work your hamstring less than say an elliptical? Just curious...

How many miles are you shooting for on Friday?

From rattletrap on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 16:09:37 from 70.192.120.44

I was told that a regular eliptical works the hams just like running, but without the impact on the knees etc. This thing works mainly the calves and quads, but still has a good running motion even though I'm sitting down.

I plan on maybe 4 or 5 slow miles Friday depending on how it feels..

From Kelli on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 18:50:00 from 71.219.74.247

SLOW miles being the key term here!!! Good luck on them, I am hoping for the best.

As a fellow gym buddy, nothing comes close to running. BUT just keep your body moving and active and keep the muscles in shape and you will be fine. Does the gym have an ARC machine? Those are a great workout, too. Kind of like an elliptical but harder!

Cookies baked, in the mail tomorrow!

From rattletrap on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 19:11:52 from 24.19.93.139

Don't worry, I am letting my PT/friend set the pace on Friday and I'm sure it will be too sloooow :)

The only other machines they have besides stationary bikes are the precor ellipticals, star steppers, and treadmills. This REX thing hasn't aggravated anything yet so I don't want to rock the boat by changing up now. It has me stepping and moving my arms in a rhythm that feels like running uphill. What more could a crazy guy like me ask for?...except maybe some cookies :) OOOOOH cookies!!! I can't wait!

If you have pool access, I'd like to suggest aqua-running, with a flotation belt. It's so close to real running. Glad you're finding ways to stay in the game! :)

Just checking in to see how that slow run went. Hopefully it went well and you can be back to good SOON!

From rattletrap on Fri, Jun 12, 2009 at 14:52:23 from 24.19.93.139

Snoqualmie - I thought about that, but I was worried that it might be too much like running and stress my ham. I really wanted to give it a total break and continue to get some cardio.

Kelli - It went well, and slow :) see today's blog...
