Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:


Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

So, this week we're already starting out with the good, the bad and the ugly. We'll start with the ugly: my son was diagnosed with strep yesterday and had a high temp of 105 for about 4 hours last night after motrin and antibiotics, poor boy! Whats ugly about this is that if I get it and go on antibiotics it will void the Typhoid immunization I just finished yesterday and I'll have to do it again - YUCK! So we're practicing good handwashing here and using Lysol like its going out of style, although I've proably already been infected before we even knew he was sick. Cross your fingers for no strep on race week! The bad: I have to taper this week for the race. I've read a little about tapering lately, but I've never done it before. Its so hard not to run! Can someone please explain to me, or give me a good reason why this really is good for me?!? I want to run so bad it hurts. The good: I get to go to NC and see my sister and her family and do the Myrtle Beach 1/2 marathon. I've been looking forward to this for a long time now and I'm so excited! I leave early Thursday morning so I'll miss running group that morning and won't be back till Midnight Monday so I don't think I'll make Tuesday either, but we'll see where my excitement level is to get back to all the good friends I've made.

As for my workout report (sorry, I know thats what this site really is for) I did a step class at the gym then the 30 min Ab's class and then came home. Again, no running due to the taper, but I'll probably stick in a walk with Lucy, or a good snow shoveling this afternoon evening. OOOH, maybe some swimming at lessons tonight...always good cross training - not to mention the steam room after :)

Rachel, the reason for tapering is to help your muscles restore glycogen that you so badly need for a race. It is so hard to do but definitely pays off on race day. I'd be careful with classes this week because a workout is a workout, whether it's step or running. I hope your little guy feels better and I hope you don't get it. Are you going to come tomorrow? If so, I'll see you then.

Divine Miss M - I don't know your running background, but, a couple of easy short runs would not hurt. I would do a few short strides out, nothing too up tempo. Ditto MN: nothing hard this week, some cross training really zaps the quads, spinning and step class would be out.

Oh, now you tell me step class is out! Well, my brain wasn't working this morning so I didn't push as hard as I usually do. I'll try to knock down the pace tomorrow and just jog the hills. Thanks for the advice! It sure seems like I need it-especially from you GREAT vetran runners.

I did step class 2 days before a marathon, and I survived!!! You should have been on the lowest step though, not up two like you were (and all of that squatting---woops)! You will be FINE, just take it easy this week. I am sure those two are much wiser than me, but I have never stopped my classes the week of a race, not once.

See you at 5:45 and THANKS for the cookies!!! I pawned two off on Becky in the daycare, Emma ate one, I ate one of each (yes, the PB ones are very good) and then I made my teenager eat the rest becasue they were calling my name. I LOVE those things!

Rachel, I hope you never get the "ugly". That would really stink. The "bad" is not that bad. I'd reduce running volume like Michelle said. Do your running at a good pace to keep your legs fresh. In other words, taper down on miles but keep the intensity. I have heard that people drop their cross training during taper. The cross training doesn't make you any faster while it might tire your muscles. The "good" sounds fun. Keep up your positive attitudes. Can't wait to hear your race report and the visit with your sister.

I'm glad you pawned some off on Becky, if she knew they were from me she probably wouldn't have taken them :) I'm sure I'll be fine for the race, if I can PR with you on a training run when I've done 30 other miles that week I'm sure I won't suffer too much from classes.

Smooth, thanks for the advice and sympathies. Like I told Kelli, if I can PR on a training run I'm sure I'll be fine :) Thats half the reason why I'm having a hard time NOT running this week. I'll post the race as soon as I can.
