Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

Another day to sleep in :) I knew I wasn't going to do body sculpt today since it kicked my trash and made me so sore last week! So, I slept in and just did the 6 on the TM at the gym. I'm getting spoiled with this sleep business, I don't know what I'm going to do tomorrow when I have to wake up!

Started at a 9:30mm and would slowly increase the speed as I felt myself getting used to the pace, so a good progressive run. Ending at 8:13mm for the last 1/4 mile.  AP for the 6 mile run was 8:59, I didn't realize I was past 6 until I was 6.07, so I decided to round it off to 6.1. I can tell I'm hitting some taper madness because faster speeds don't seem so hard. I need to cool it and stick to the taper plan! I really want SGM to go well!

Walked and chatted for a bit after the miles with a friend, then stretched and chatted some more. Love these easy days! Shins are groaning a bit and I'm really trying to take care of them - stretch and roll the calves, I scraped the injured area Saturday and Sunday. Does anyone have any experience with compression socks helping shin splints? I'm kind of curious and willing to give it a shot if it's worth the $!!

As much as I'd like to kick you in the left ovary sometimes, I really am amazed at how quickly you've recovered from child birthing.

I don't really want to kick you in the left ovary. I just thought it sounded funny.

I was actually wondering the same thing about the compression socks at TOU where there was a vendor selling them. I can hear my shins talking occasionally. Maybe compression socks would help shut them up.

I think it is great that you are sleeping in.

I have been wearing socks and the sleeves for the last year or so. I wear them on all long runs and for sure in the races. Mostly to help with the calves cramping up in a few of my marathons. Not so much in my long runs though. I love them. They have helped alot with recovery and making my calves and shin splints go away. But some things I have noticed. And will pass on to you.

Socks seems to give more overall compression. But they are very thin and so I have had to use them with another pair of socks over the top of them. Which can get a bit tight and sometimes even cause blisters.

Sleeves which are basically like the socks but end at your ankles. So you can pick your socks. And even though the compress might be just a slight be less snug. They sure make up for it in wearing my normal socks. And after my last few marathons I have worn my compression tights. Wow do they speed up the process of recovery even that much more faster. Well worth the money if you ask me. Hope that helps.:)

You're getting ready for SGM? You are amazing. And stay away from Burt.

I hope that was an 8 hour block - uninterrupted! You are going to do so well at SG!

i have some compression sleeves as well. i usually only wear them for recovery after long runs, but i did wear them in a 5k recently and they felt nice. not sure how they work for shin splints, but just by the way they feel, i assume it would provide some sort of relief.

nice run today. i am glad you were able to sleep in!

Burt, call me mother nature :)

Chad, I think I may give it a shot, I'd do anything to shut them up right now!

Nancy, I really am enjoying the sleep!

Huans, thanks for the input. I was thinking of the sleeves not the full socks. I'm a little particular about my running socks, so I would just go for the sleeves. If I can get out today I am going to try to pick up a pair - suggestions on brands or are they all about the same?

Carolyn, yup - gonna shoot for that elusive BQ, we'll see.

Toby, uninterrupted...well, not really. However, sleeping is MUCH better since I've been putting baby on a schedule and putting him down as soon as he gets groggy and not pushing him to stay awake. He sleeps 9-4ish, but then will just wake to eat and will sleep another full 3-4 hour block after that. So, we're getting close. I'm just hoping that it's getting better and we won't go back to getting worse again!

Allie, glad to know even speedies like yourself utilize them and can see some benefit. Thanks for the input, and I think with this info I'm going to shell out the $ to give them a try. I need to do SOMETHING to get these shin splints gone in the next 10 days!

Slick, tapering on, and enjoying the extra rest!! Thanks!

i've tried two different kinds, and i would recommend the CEP brand.

From RAD on Wed, Sep 22, 2010 at 13:34:25 from 67.172.229.125

ahhh, excellent! Thanks Allie, I'm such a cheapie I'd probably buy whatever was cheapest :)

From allie on Wed, Sep 22, 2010 at 14:27:45 from 174.19.51.35

depending on where you go, they will likely be a bit more expensive. i usually go the cheap route myself, but when you are shelling out money anyway for a specific product, i think the extra $5 or $10 for the best option is worth it.

and when i say "best" i know that it is totally my opinion, so do what you want :)

Reviewing some comments on-line looks like the majority of folks agree with you. $40 at WRC, so I think I'll give it a shot.
