Gatesville Shivaree 10K ... Yeah, I PR...!!! Wait a minute, this was my first 10K :-)

Even though I don't feel like I'm back to 100% on my conditioning I was happy with this race. My plan was to try and run a 7:10 pace or less knowing it would be taxing because of the heat, humidity and the fact that my cardio is just not where it needs to be.

The race was actually in my home town and in conjunction with the Shivaree (I have no idea what it's celebrating but it's been going on annually as long as I can remember). They had kids runs, a 5K and then the 10K. There were not many entered (I believe about 20 in the 10K). When I got to the race I looked around to see who might be the best runners and found one guy (I think late 20's or early 30's) who was obviously a runner and striked up a conversation with him. Come to find out his plan was similar to mine so we basiclly ran the race together. There were a few others who looked like they were seasoned runners but I didn't bother approaching any of them.

My new best friend and I started out in a pack of 5 guys who all ran together for the first mile. The pace seemed ok but looking back I think it was a little too slow on the first mile. All of the pack stayed together through the first mile and I was thinking maybe there would be a couple more who were planning to run my same pace as me or better. About mile 2 the first one dropped out. At mile three the second one dropped out and at mile 4 the third one dropped out leaving just me and my new best friend. I seemed to be running fine through these first miles but I was really breathing hard, even after the first two miles. I know my new best friend though I was going to drop out at any time (because of the hard breathing) but I kept reminding myself that I always breath hard (although today it was extra hard). As I ran through the fourth mile I started to get worried about my HR not knowing how long I could keep going at this pace and running at over 90% of my HRR. My new best friend and I ran together until about mile 5.5 where we hit a pretty steep hill. I don't know if I just mentally siked myself out or if I had just run myself out but I slowed a little...just enough to give my friend a 30 yard lead. After we topped the hill I told myself that I was just going to suck it up and finish strong or just blow myself up. I gain about 15 of the yards back in the last quarter of a mile but just couldn't pull out a win!

All in all I was happy with my run, especially with my determination to finish strong. (I added a column on the chart below to show "Best Pace" for each mile). I'm happy I could kick it up to a 4:47 Pace (and a 4:04 Best Pace) for the last .25 miles.

I was really tired at the end. I got dizzy and had to sit for a while to recover but after a while felt fine.

Note to self: I've got to work on things to strengthen my cardio. I think my legs are fine and can go faster if I can just get my cardio stronger. Also, what are you supposed to run the day after a 10K race...?

Preston, nice race! You probably underestimated what you can do and ran the first mile too slow, but hard to tell in the heat. On a cool day it would have been even faster of course. I'm OK with 5Ks, but almost afraid to run a 10K in the heat. Nice job.

Agree with Flat, that is an excellent time, especially in the summer. Great effort as well, way to push yourself at the end. When the cool temps come back this fall you're going to have a lot of fun.

Nice job! Especially in the heat. You really smoked that final 0.2! I don't think anything get's you in better shape for running 5K and 10Ks than running some. You're in for more big PRs this year.

WOW! What a race! Congratulations!! That is such a great time! You would have to be in amazing shape.

Awesome job! I am with Flat, I will run a 5k in the heat but too afraid of a 10k. Way to finish strong - it will help you in all of your races.

Hey Flat & Der Hammer,

I really didn't think about the heat being that much of a factor in a 10K (that's the novice runner in me). I was just wanting to run a faster pace race. It was about 75 degrees when we started and 80 when we finished. I'd like to run another 10K in a couple of months to see if I can improve on the time.

Thanks Joe,

I was happy with the push and speed at the end but if you could have seen (and heard) me you'd probably have thought I was going to die. I'm sure the people at the race were thinking "why did that idiot run that hard at such a dinky little race like this". Even my new best friend (who won the race) simply walked away. He obviously didn't have to put nearly the effort I did into the race.

Dave,

I'm think I'm finally healed from all my leg problems and hoping to start knocking down some PR's. I think I've got most of the race distances covered for at least one race now (5K, 10K, 1/2-M, and Full-M).

Thanks Steam8,

I was happy with the time. Now that I've been running a year I've got a base to build from. Hopefully it will all get better (and faster).

Awesome race & time! Those splits look great ... much better to have a 7:22 mile at the start than the end ... lord knows I have ruined many shorter races by taking off too fast! 10ks are fun but tough ... 6 miles is a long way to sustain a really hard effort!

From Kim on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 10:46:47 from 67.199.180.90

Wow! Very good race and report! I love that you get new best friends! I like having new best friends too!

From Rossy on Mon, Jun 27, 2011 at 17:46:35 from 167.138.234.18

Sorry, I just got around to reading this race report… Nice 10k Preston and way to finish strong!

From I Just Run on Mon, Jun 27, 2011 at 17:47:47 from 67.79.11.242

Ahhh...It was a small race but I really wanted to win 1st. I was 5 seconds off the winner :-(
