Okay...Here's the details... I need to log this so I have a record of the account and don't make this mistake again. I started with the intention of running about 15 miles at a slow 9:25 pace for the first 10 miles and about a 8:25 pace for the last 5 miles. I thought if I could do this comfortably I would feel confident to go to OKC and run the marathon. I was really courious as to the condition I would be in after the (basic) layoff for 20 days. Yesterday was not too bad with the 15 miles, splitting it in the two runs, morning treadmill and evening road run. Today was very different. after about 7 - 8 miles I though, "this isn't going to be that bad", so I changed my thinking and decided to run 18 - 20 miles. Ha...that was a BIG mistake. Everything was going pretty good until about mile 12 or 13 where I basiclly cratered. I'm not sure if I just hit the wall or if I just became dehydrated and hungry. I had my water belt with two bottles of water and two bottles of gaterade and carried another water bottle in my hand. I took one Gu for the middle of the run too. I had also placed two bottles of water at mile 8. When I got to mile 8 I grabbed and drank one of the bottles leaving the other for the return (since my route was an out and back). After the turn at mile 10 I came back and grabbed the second bottle and drank it. After that second bottle of water is when things started to fall apart. My quads really started to burn and I knew there was no way to run any faster than my current speed so I revised my thinking, again, and said to myself, "ok...if I can just hold this pace to the end I'll still feel like I've accomplished my goal". But, the further I went the worse it got. Miles 13 and 14 were very difficult and at mile 15 I even stopped for a minute or so to see if that would help. After that mile I knew it was a lost cause and began to walk much of mile 16 and 17. Mile 18 was the killer, only running the first of it I finally resolved myself to walk the majority of it. At the end of mile 18 I was feeling dizzy and knew I was in trouble since I was still 3 miles from my house. I finally just stopped, sat down and rested. Luckly a neighbor came by, I waved him down, and he gave me a ride back to my house (Flat...does this sound familar?). When I got home I was somewhat disorinented and sat for a while trying to recover. I went in, drank, ate, took a quick shower and layed down for a 2 hour nap. After all of that I finally started to feel normal again, except for my quads which are still pretty sore.
Now the big question: Was my problem lack/loss of conditioning or dehydration and lack of food/energy in my system? I'm sure it was a combination of both. The temperature was hot, the wind was hot and the sun was hot...obviously not good things for running! I've got to figure a better way to fuel and hydrate! Yesterday I was ready to go to OKC, today I'm not. I would not even be able to finish the race, much less with a decent time, if I perform like today. I'll see how the next couple of days goes but right now it's a NO GO for me.

Ezekiel 37:3-5
3 He asked me, "Son of man, can these bones live?"
I said, "Sovereign LORD, you alone know."
4 Then he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones and say to them, 'Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! 5 This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. |
