Short Tempo run today on my first taper week. Last year I ran this same run in 6:42 avg. pace. This time was a little faster at 6:39. This wasn't all out race effort but I had to push a little. It doesn't seem like it's too tough but the second two miles both have long gradual uphills that seem to really slow me down.

Rest or light cross-train tomorrow and a 10-13 mile run at marathon pace on Saturday will pretty much do it for anything tough. Now I start hoping for good weather! Right now it says its going to be 34 degrees the morning of the race and mostly cloudy.

Matthew 16:2-3

He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

Great tempo run, especially net uphill like that. Looking good for Cowtown, I'll be tracking!

Yes, looking good for Cowtown! Everyone has a different opinion on this, and it varies for different people ... But there is no way I would run 10+ miles at MP 9 days before race. Maybe 10, but I would be more inclined to do a mile wu & cd & then 8 at MP. Also, not sure what your planned MP is, but I think it is impt to stick with that pace, you got your faster miles in today. Since, 7:38 would get you a 10 min pr, I would probably stick in that range ... Definitely nothing faster than 7:30. protein & sleep will help you more than anything right now! :)

Just my 2 cents ....

Nice run IJR! It will be great if that is the temp on race day.

Great run, IJR!

About today's verse: I never knew that ‘Red sky at night, sailor’s delight; red sky at morning, sailors take warning.’ was biblical. Neat.

Thanks everyone!

I have been running a week behind in my training schedule because of the days I missed when my knee was hurting. On the correct schedule I am supposed to run 10 miles @ 7:26 for tomorrow's long run. If I stick with what I've been doing I would be doing 13 @ 7:26. I think I will split the difference and run a couple of easy miles and then drop to my marathon pace for the last ten. Even though I've been training to run a 7:26 pace overall I think I am actually going to shoot for 7:37. This would put me under 3:20. I think I'll run this training run at that pace.

So far the weather says its going to be 36 degrees at the start of the race. If I can keep my hands and feet warm that should be great!

Tom,

Your welcome, I'm glad I can give something back on the blog :-)

From JG on Sat, Feb 16, 2013 at 06:55:25 from 174.49.78.66

have a great run today Preston, I think 7:37 is a good pace to dial in on ... And if you can keep from running faster than that for the first 20, I think you may just find the strength to drop it a tad the last 6 ... But even if you hang onto that pace, you are in for a great race!

Hope the forecast holds, temps in the 40's at start will be perfect .... We all know it won't be in the 30's in Texas! :)

Looks like a great plan, hope your run today goes well.

From JG on Sat, Feb 16, 2013 at 22:13:06 from 174.49.78.66

Hey Preston, I have a friend who set out to BQ @ Myrtle Beach this weekend ... He needed 3:15 & ran a 3:14:12 ... A 7:24 pace.

I thought he had a great strategy going into the race, ” My goal was to run a conservative first 10, confident second 10, & FULLY embrace the pain the last 6.2!”

I thought this was a great strategy & it made me think of you & Cowtown. I realize there are more hills @ Cowtown you may have to account for, but I really like the idea of breaking the marathon into segments & approaching them the way he did ... Some interesting notes on his Splits:

1 - slowest mile was first: 7:39

2 - fastest mile in 1st 10 was 9: 7:24

3 - AP first 10 was 7:29

4 - slowest mile in 2nd 10 was 11: 7:27

5 - fastest was 16: 7:15

6 - AP second 10 was 7:20

7 - fastest mile in last 6 was 21: 7:18

8 - slowest in last 6 was 26: 7:35

9 - AP last 6 was 7:28

10 - At mile 10, he was 30 seconds off his BQ time ... But he was confident that is what would get him his BQ!

He ran exactly as he planned ... Conservative, Confident, & then hang on ...

Easier said than done.

You have thrown down some great closing miles on your long runs. Regardless of the pace you settle on as your target, remember if you run the first 10 @ 7:45, you are way ahead of pace for a BQ & nice PR. Your training has proven if you start conservative, you WILL finish strong.

I am excited to see you in Boston in '14 ... Assuming I can requalify this year! :)

JG,

This is great advice. I wish your friend could prewrite my race report :-) I think my race plan will be to try and run the first 10 right at 8:00, the second 10 drop to 7:45 and the last 6.2 try and go to 7:30. I'm not sure if I can do that but that's what I'm hoping!
